Maharashtra govt to form policy for desilting rivers to prevent floods: CM

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Wednesday announced formation of a comprehensive policy for desilting rivers in the state to prevent floods. He was speaking in the Maharashtra Assembly to a question raised by BJP member Sunil Rane on some rivers flooding earlier than expected and causing major damages. Shinde said, The Maharashtra government is forming a comprehensive policy for desilting of all rivers in the state. It would work as a guideline for the implementing authority to take necessary steps to clean and desilt the river beds. Meanwhile, to a question by some members on satellite phones, minister Abdul Sattar said in the House that the previous state government had bought satellite phones at a rate of Rs 1,70,000 per unit, when similar phones are available at Rs 80,000 per unit. Himachal Pradesh CM Thakur to visit flash flood, landslide-hit Mandi today

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur will on Monday visit flash flood and landslide hit areas in Mandi district, officials said. Twenty-two people, including eight members of a family, were killed and twelve others injured in 36 incidents of landslides and flash floods triggered by heavy rainfall in Himachal Pradesh on Saturday. The chief minister's home district Mandi is the worst hit where 13 people have died and five persons are feared dead as they went missing. At least one person has been injured in flash floods and landslides in Mandi. According to officials, the chief minister is scheduled to reach Mandi at around 8.15 am in a helicopter from Shimla. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday appealed to the government of Himachal Pradesh to provide all possible help to those affected by flash floods and landslides in the state. Assam CM launches DBT to give rehabilitation grant for flood-damaged houses

The Assam government on Saturday launched a direct benefit transfer (DBT) programme to extend rehabilitation grants to beneficiaries whose houses were damaged by this year's flood. Under the initiative, the affected families will receive the grant to their bank accounts for reconstructing their houses. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma ceremonially launched the programme at the state secretariat here, while ministers and senior officials attended similar programmes in districts during the day. Addressing a press conference on the occasion, Sarma said, "A list of 2,04,348 houses, which were either severely or partially damaged in this year's flood, has been compiled. The rehabilitation grant to be paid to these families who have lost their homes will be transferred directly to their bank accounts." He said Rs 119.11 crore has been sanctioned for the purpose. 16 killed, 36 others missing in flash flooding in China: Officials

At least 16 people were killed and 36 others remained missing after a flash flood hit a county in China's northwest Qinghai province, local authorities said on Thursday. The flash flood hit Datong Hui and Tu Autonomous County on Wednesday night, state-run Xinhua news agency quoted the local emergency management department as saying. A total of 6,245 people from 1,517 households in six villages were affected by the flash flood. The mountain flood was triggered by a sudden heavy rainfall in Datong county. Local authorities initiated a level-two emergency response on Thursday morning, state-run Global Times reported. Level-II is the second-most severe response in a four-tier disaster control emergency response system in China.
