Integrated flood warning system to be extended to Kolkata: Harsh Vardhan

The Integrated Flood Warning Systems developed for Mumbai and Chennai to cater to the needs of coastal cities will be extended to Kolkata, Earth Sciences Minister Harsh Vardhan said on Sunday. Vardhan, who is also the Science and Technology Minister, said not only has the percentage of women contributing to science education at the school level increased significantly, but the percentage of women in government laboratories has also increased. In order to further improve the situation, the Department of Science and Technology (DST) is increasingly boosting its interventions for the participation of women in S&T at multiple levels through various new schemes, Vardhan said. India sends relief material to Nepal for flood, landslide-affected families

India on Sunday handed over a consignment of disaster relief material to Nepal for flood- and landslide-affected families, officials said. On behalf of the Government of India, Deputy Chief of Mission of the Indian Embassy here Namgya C Khampa handed over the material to Chanda Chaudhary, president of the Nepal-India Women Friendship Society. The relief material includes tents and plastic sheets for distribution to flood- and landslide-affected families in the country's five districts, the Indian mission said in a statement. In view of the recent destruction and loss of life caused by floods and landslides, the entire consignment will be distributed through the society in coordination with the local governments in the affected districts of Sindhupalchok, Kailali, Mahottari, Nawalparasi and Sarlahi in Province 2, Bagmati Province, Province 5 and Sudur Paschim Province. This was part of the Government of India's regular humanitarian assistance and disaster relief support to Nepal.

6-member central team visits flood-affected villages of east Vidarbha

A six-member team from the Centre on Friday visited parts of east Vidarbha, which were affected by floods, following incessant rainfall last month, an official said. Several villages in five districts including Nagpur, Chandrapur, Bhandara, Gadchiroli and Gondia in Nagpur division were flooded due to water released from nearby dams and rivers. The Central team is on a three-day visit and on Friday it took stock of the damages at villages of Kamptee, Parseoni and Mauda talukas and also villages in Chandrapur district, after a review meeting at Nagpur Divisional Commissionerate, a release stated. During the inspection, residents of the affected areas apprised the Central team about damages to farmlands, cattle and property, it was stated. According to the release, nearly, 88,864 hectares of farmland in 34 talukas of Nagpur division have been affected due to floods, while 23,000 houses have also been damaged.
