Verstappen wins Italian Grand Prix for 1st time to close in on title

Formula One championship leader Max Verstappen again made light work of starting down the grid as he won the Italian Grand Prix on Sunday to leave him within touching distance of a second successive title. Verstappen now has a 116-point lead over Charles Leclerc, who finished second after another questionable strategy decision from Ferrari on its home track. With just six races remaining, the Dutch driver could mathematically clinch the title in Singapore next month. It was the first time Verstappen has set foot on the iconic Monza podium, with his highest previous finish being fifth in 2018. Verstappen started seventh after he was among a number of drivers hit by grid penalties in Monza but made his way up to third by the first corner of the second lap. The Red Bull driver then picked off George Russell in a Mercedes at the start of Lap 5 setting up the hunt for polesitter Leclerc in his Ferrari. The Virtual Safety Car gave him an opportunity as it came out on Lap 12 after Sebasti

Verstappen wins Dutch Grand Prix to seal 10th win and extend F1 lead

Formula One championship leader Max Verstappen made quick work of a safety car restart to win the Dutch Grand Prix on Sunday in front of 100,000 adoring fans, and make it four straight wins for the first time in his F1 career. Verstappen's 10th win matched his tally from last year and the Red Bull driver extended his championship lead to 109 points. With seven races left a second straight title is looking increasingly likely as his challengers - Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and teammate Sergio Perez in joint second - continue to fall further back. George Russell finished second for Mercedes ahead of Leclerc, with Lewis Hamilton dropping from first to fourth. Verstappen looked to be coasting to victory when a safety car came out on Lap 56, after the engine cut out on Valtteri Bottas' Alfa Romeo. Verstappen changed tires and was behind leader Hamilton's Mercedes with 12 laps left. But Hamilton was on a slower medium tire and Verstappen on the quicker softs left the British driver prett

Audi to enter Formula One in 2026 as power unit manufacturer: Chairman

German manufacturer Audi will enter Formula One in 2026 in line with new engine regulations, chairman Markus Duesmann said on Friday. Audi will manufacture its own power unit in an era when there will be a greater emphasis on sustainable fuels and an increased electrical component in engines. From 2026, the electric power output for the power units, consisting of an electric motor, battery, control electronics, and a combustion engine, will increase. The electric motor will then be nearly as powerful as the combustion engine and the highly efficient 1.6-liter turbo engines will run on advanced sustainable fuel which Audi says was a prerequisite for entry into the series. I want to officially announce that Audi has officially registered as PU (power unit) Formula One manufacturer. So in 2026 we will start racing in F1, Audi chief executive Markus Duesmann said at the Belgian Grand Prix. Racing, motorsport is in the DNA of Audi. If you think of Le Mans, and Dakar, we have always bee

Former F1 boss Ecclestone to be charged with fraud over assets

Former Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone will be charged with fraud by false representation following a government investigation into his overseas assets, British prosecutors said Monday. Chief Crown Prosecutor Andrew Penhale said after reviewing evidence from the tax office, authorities have authorized a charge against Ecclestone over his failure to declare overseas assets worth more than 400 million pounds ($477 million). Simon York, of Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs, said the announcement followed a complex and worldwide investigation into the 91-year-old businessman's finances. The criminal charge relates to projected tax liabilities arising from more than 400 million pounds of offshore assets which were concealed from Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs, he said. The case is expected to be heard at Westminster Magistrates' Court in London on Aug. 22.
