Guest nations at G-7 worries over China's threats to Taiwan, Russia's war

This week's summit of the Group of Seven wealthy democracies in Hiroshima will include eight other guest nations, part of a complicated, high-stakes diplomatic gambit meant to settle the world's most serious crises. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has invited South Korea, Australia, India, Brazil, Vietnam, Indonesia, Comoros and the Cook Islands. Kishida hopes this mix of countries will help efforts to stand up to China's assertiveness and Russia's invasion of Ukraine, according to analysts. He also wants stronger ties with US allies and with developing nations and to make progress on working toward a nuclear-free world, something that looks increasingly difficult amid North Korean and Russian nuclear threats. Here's a look at what to expect as the rich world leaders welcome these guest countries: PUSHBACK ON CHINA, RUSSIA As their top diplomats did last month in a meeting in Nagano, Japan, the leaders of the G-7 nations -- the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom, Franc

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to join US President Joe Biden and his counterparts from Australia and Japan at a summit of the Quad leaders in Sydney on May 24 that is expected to focus on implications of the Ukraine conflict and the overall situation in the Indo-Pacific. Before travelling to Australia, Modi is likely to visit the Japanese city of Hiroshima to attend the annual summit of the Group of Seven (G7) advanced economies that is scheduled to take place from May 19 to 21, people familiar with the matter said on Wednesday. During his visit to India last month, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida invited Modi for the G7 summit. In their summit, the Quad leaders are also expected to bolster overall cooperation in the Indo-Pacific, a region that has been witnessing growing Chinese military assertiveness. 'No impunity': G7 vows tough, unified stance on Russia-Ukraine war

Top diplomats from the Group of Seven wealthy democracies vowed a unified front against Chinese threats to Taiwan and Russia's war of aggression in Ukraine, saying at the close of their meetings Tuesday that they were committed to boosting and enforcing tough sanctions against Moscow. The G-7 communique laying out their commitments also included strong words over an unprecedented run of North Korean missile tests. But it was China's growing assertiveness in Asia and Russia's invasion of Ukraine that highlighted the three-day summit hosted by Japan in this hot springs resort town. There can be no impunity for war crimes and other atrocities such as Russia's attacks against civilians and critical civilian infrastructure, the ministers said. We remain committed to intensifying sanctions against Russia, coordinating and fully enforcing them, the communique said, and would support for as long as it takes" Ukraine as it defends itself. The foreign ministers' communique was prepared as a

US energy secretary says G7 can lead global carbon emissions cuts

Wealthy nations can lead by example in cutting carbon emissions, though much faster action is needed to stem global warming, US Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said on Friday in an interview with The Associated Press. Granholm and other senior energy and environment officials from the Group of Seven advanced economies are in Hokkaido in northern Japan this week for meetings on climate change, energy security and related issues. That's what we hope to do is lead by example, Granholm said after touring the world's first and only liquefied hydrogen carrier, a ship that showcases Japanese efforts to transform heavily polluting coal into emissions-free hydrogen power. At the G-7 summit in May last year, member nations set a common goal of achieving a fully or predominantly decarbonised electricity supply by 2035. The fact that carbon emissions are continuing to rise despite massive investments in cleaner energy is very disappointing, Granholm said. But she noted that 90 per cent of

LGBTQ summit 'Pride 7' calls on Japan to enact anti-discrimination law

Japanese LGBTQ activists and supporters on Thursday held an inaugural Pride 7 Summit in Tokyo, where they called on Group of Seven governments to promote and strengthen support and legal protections for LGBTQ people and urged Japan's government to enact an anti-discrimination law before it hosts this year's G-7 summit in May. Japan is the only G-7 country that does not recognise same-sex marriage or provide other equal rights protections for LGBTQ people. Participants at the Pride 7 Summit called on the G-7 to protect the rights of LGBTQ people and prohibit discrimination throughout society. The Pride 7 engagement group will finalise the wording of a draft communique and submit it to each G-7 nation by the end of April, said Kanae Doi, Japan director of Human Rights Watch and a P-7 organiser. P-7 was established in March to make policy proposals to step up efforts ahead of the G-7 summit, which will be held in Hiroshima. While momentum is on the rise ahead of the G-7, experts say

G7 ministers meet with Russia-Ukraine conflict, China ties on agenda

Top diplomats from the world's major industrialised democracies grappled with the implications of Russia's war in Ukraine, China's growing economic clout and aims on Taiwan, and Iran's crackdown on anti-government protesters as they opened two days of talks on Thursday. Meeting in the western German city of Muenster, foreign ministers from the Group of Seven nations were taking stock of the situation in Ukraine more than eight months since Russia invaded the country, exacerbating food and energy shortages and creating ripple effects far from Europe. While we are steadfast in our support for Ukraine, we must not forget that the impacts of Russia's aggression, interference and hostility extend across the world," British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly said ahead of the meeting. Russian President Vladimir Putin's actions are plunging the world's poorest further into despair, putting global food security on the brink and pushing up energy prices", he said. "These actions only serve to
