Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had displayed humility by offering his chair on a stage to the wife of his colleague L K Advani at the latter's birthday at a hotel here in 1995, a hotelier recalled today. The hotelier, Dattatreya Chitale, also recalled Vajpayee's fondness for "Kanda Pohe", the traditional Marathi breakfast, whenever he used to visit the hotel located on Apte Road in the city. Chitale, the owner of hotel "Shreyas" which serves vegetarian 'Puneri' cuisine, said Vajpayee must have stayed at his hotel at least 15 to 16 times between 1980 and 1995. He recalled that a three-day national executive meet of the BJP was organised at Arora Tower in Pune in November 1995. BJP leaders, including Advani and Vajpayee, had come to Pune to attend that meet. Such was Atal Bihari Vajpayee's love for food that it once took a wily plan by his aides to deploy Bollywood star Madhuri Dixit to draw him away from gulab jamun at an official lunch. As Vajpayee breathed his last today, close aides and journalists recalled his fondness for gastronomical delights particularly sweets and sea food, his favourite being a platter of prawns. Senior journalist Rasheed Kidwai remembered how while attending an official lunch, Vajpayee, then the prime minister, was headed for the food counter even though he was on a strict diet. Anxious aides then struck on a plan. They immediately introduced him to Dixit who was in attendance, and soon the film buff in Vajpayee took over as the two went on to talk about movies. "Meanwhile, the aides quickly removed the desserts from his line of vision," recalled Kidwai. Bureaucrats who worked with Vajpayee said that wherever he went he insisted on tasting the local cuisine. "So it was puchkas in Kolkata, biriyani and halim in

Malaysia's new government will change an official tourism logo featuring an orangutan wearing sunglasses after it sparked a storm of mockery, a minister said today. The "Visit Malaysia 2020" logo has an image of the orangutan with its arm around a proboscis monkey, a picture of a turtle -- also sporting shades -- and multi-coloured, uneven lettering. It was released in January as part of a campaign to attract more tourists to the tropical Southeast Asian country but it was widely panned for being ugly and outdated, with thousands signing a petition calling for it to be dumped. Despite the criticism, the then-tourism minister stood by the design, which also includes a retro image of Kuala Lumpur's iconic Petronas Twin Towers. But the scandal-plagued government of prime minister Najib Razak was booted out of power in May, and new Tourism Minister Mohamaddin Ketapi is now pledging to alter the logo. A contest will be held to re-design it, he was cited as saying in local media, but he ...
