24-year-old lioness, inmate of zoo in Gwalior, dead

Rani (24), an inmate of the Gandhi Zoological Park here who was believed to be the oldest lioness in Madhya Pradesh, died Wednesday due to age-related ailments, an official said. The lioness had lost sight due to old age and was not keeping well for a long time. The Asiatic lioness had stopped eating in the last couple of days, the park's veterinarian Upendra Yadav told PTI. Experts from the Jabalpur-based veterinary university tried to save her but she breathed her last Wednesday evening, he said. The animal had been brought here from Chhatbir Lion Safari, Chandigarh, in 2004, Dr Yadav added.

Delhi's first animal welfare policy calls for birth control of monkeys

Birth control of monkeys, a revised regime for sterilisation of stray dogs and electronic chips to identify owners of deserted pets and cattle are some of the measures that Delhi government's first policy on animal welfare recommends. The 'animal health and welfare policy 2018', which also proposed a cowshed at Ghumanhera where cows will be kept along with elderly people in a unique coexistence, was Wednesday discussed in a meeting attended by Development Minister Gopal Rai. "There was no such policy before to consider the animal welfare in entirety covering issuing like menace caused by monkeys and stray dogs. We aim to keep this policy open ended so that it is updated from time to time," Rai told reporters after a meeting with department officials, animal welfare groups and veterinary experts. Politicos, action group oppose Pune police's helmet drive

An anti-helmet lobby in Pune city in Maharashtra has decided to oppose a police initiative to make motorists compulsorily wear helmets. The group, calling themselves Anti-Helmet Compulsion Action Committee (AHCAC), Tuesday carried out a mock funeral of a helmet at Vaikunth crematorium here as part of its protest.
