Google pays homage to musician Lachhu Maharaj on 74th birthday

Google on Tuesday honoured noted tabla maestro Lachhu Maharaj on his 74th birth anniversary by dedicating a doodle to the musician.Born in Varanasi on October 16, 1944 as Lakshmi Narayan Singh, Lachhu Maharaj was known for his proficiency in playing the tabla as part of the Benaras Gharana- one of the six most common styles of playing the tabla, which was developed nearly 200 years ago.Apart from his performances, he also featured in a plethora of films.The tabla maestro was even nominated for a Padma Shri. However, he refused to accept the accolade.Lacchu Maharaj passed away in July 2016 in Varanasi at the age of 72 after a prolonged illness.

To prevent choking, rlys plans to install dustbins in coaches with bio-toilets

To prevent the choking of newly installed bio-toilets in trains, the Indian Railways is planning to place dustbins in all their lavatories by December 2018, sources said. The decision was taken after plastic bags, sanitary napkins, bottles were found stuck in toilets resulting in not only their choking but also stinks in the coaches. The railway board has now directed all zonal railways to install dustbins in their bio-toilets by December this year, the source said. According to the source, such dustbins are already in the process of being installed in the bio-toilets of 40,283 coaches, while the installations have been completed in 30,000 coaches. Anaerobic digestion is applied for processing human excreta in the bio-toilets that are being fitted in passenger coaches of trains. No human excreta is thrown on tracks from a bio-toilet. H M Pernal gets Vishwa Konkani book award

'Beeg Ani Beegath', a collection of short stories in Konkani by well-known writer, journalist and critic H M Pernal has bagged the prestigious 'Vimala V Pai Vishwa' Konkani best book award for the year 2018. Konkani poet Sharathchandra Shenoy from Kochi won the Vishwa Konkani best poetry award for his book 'Idam Na Mama,' while Vishwanath M Shet from Uttara Kannada bagged the Vishwa Konkani lifetime achievement award. Each award carries a purse of Rs one lakh each, a certificate, memento and shawl. The awards will be presented at a function here on November 18 in the presence of sponsor T V Mohandas Pai, a press release from the World Konkani Centre said Monday. H M Pernal is the pen name of Henry M Mendonca, a native of Pernal in Udupi district, who currently lives in Mangaluru.
