Woman rescued after driving into Germany gas station store

Firefighters say they had to rescue a woman who got stuck in her car after she drove into a gas station store in western Germany. The woman drove through a sliding door into the store in Bochum yesterday. Her BMW only came to a stop when it smashed in a refrigerator. She had a toddler in the car with her, but neither she nor the child or anyone else was hurt. Bochum firefighters say it took work to get the driver out of the car, because fallen shelves and goods blocked the vehicle's doors.

India's Neeraj Goyat is WBC Asia Boxer of the Year

Indian pugilist Neeraj Goyat has been conferred with the WBC Asia Boxer of the Year Award. Neeraj is the current WBC Asia champion in welter weight category. Since turning pro in 2011, Neeraj has won nine fights including two knockouts. Commenting on the award, Neeraj said, "I am really happy to receive such an honour from WBC, I will continue to work hard in the future fights." Former IAF chief Idris Hassan Latif laid to rest

Former Chief of the Indian Air Force (IAF) Air Chief Marshal Idris Hassan Latif, who died aged 94, was laid to rest here today. The funeral was conducted with full military honours at a cemetery in the Old City of Hyderabad, Defence sources said. Latif, who was the IAF chief from September 1978 to August 1981, passed away at a private hospital here yesterday after a brief illness. After his retirement in 1981, Latif held the posts of Maharashtra Governor and Indian Ambassador to France. He had joined the Royal Indian Air Force in 1941 at the age of 18 and was commissioned the next year. On completion of his training at Ambala, he was posted in Karachi, where he flew vintage biplanes like the Wapiti, Audaxes and Harts, on Anti-Submarine flights over the Arabian Sea. During 1943-44, he was one of the few Indian pilots to be seconded to the Royal Air Force in the United Kingdom, where he underwent training on more contemporary aircraft like the Hurricane and Spitfire. Four academics to receive Visitor's Award from Prez

President Ram Nath Kovind will present the Visitor's Award for research in the fields of basic and applied science, humanities, arts and social science during a meeting of vice chancellors of central universities at the Rashtrapati Bhavan tomorrow, a statement from the President's office said. Lucasfilm chief Kathleen Kennedy sent a special congratulatory message to Marvel Studios on the massive box office success of "Avengers: Infinity War". The photograph, signed by Kennedy, was shared on Star Wars' official Twitter page, which showed a lightsaber symbolically being handed to Iron Man. 3 labourers killed in TN quarry mishap

Three workers were killed and two others injured when rocks fell on them at a gravel quarry near Vadipatti in the district today, police said. The three were crushed to death on the spot in the mishap that occurred in Poochampatti village. The injured had been admitted to a hospital, police added.

US President Donald Trump has hailed Indian-origin Kalpana Chawla as an American hero for devoting her life to the space programme and inspiring millions of girls to become astronauts. 4 members of a family drown in TN river

Four members of a family -- three women and a girl -- drowned in Bhavani River in Sathyamangalam in the district today, police said. The victims were taking bath in the river when one of them strayed into deep waters and drowned. The other three tried to save her, but they too drowned, they said. Police along with Fire and Rescue Services personnel and divers retrieved bodies of three women, including a 35-year old and her teenaged daughter. The other woman was aged 25. Efforts were on to locate the body of a 12-year old girl. The four, belonging to neighbouring Tirupur, had come to their relative's house in Sathyamangalam and went for a bath this evening when the mishap occurred, police added.
