Former Chief Justice of Madras, Kerala High Courts no more

Former Chief Justice of Madras and Kerala High Courts B Subhashan Reddy passed away here on Wednesday. He was 76. Reddy was admitted to a private hospital here due to ill-health a few days ago and the end came this morning, sources said. Governor of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana ESL Narasimhan, Telangana Chief Minister Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, BJP MP and former Union Minister Bandaru Dattatreya condoled the death of Reddy. Narasimhan visited the residence of Reddy and placed a wreath on the mortal remains of Reddy, a press release from Raj Bhavan said. The Governor conveyed his sympathies and condolences to the members of the bereaved, the release said. Rao directed the Chief Secretary to conduct the funeral of Reddy with state honours, a CMO release said. Reddy had held several important positions, including judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court, Chief Justice of Madras and Kerala High Courts, chairman of State Human Rights Commission and Lok Ayukta. Sreejesh nominated for Khel Ratna; Chinglensana, Akashdeep, Deepika for Arjuna

Ace India goalkeeper P R Sreejesh has been nominated for the prestigious Rajiv Khel Ratna Award by Hockey India while the names of three other players have been proposed for the Arjuna Award. Midfielder Chinglensana Singh Kangujam and forward Akashdeep Singh and women's team defender Deepika have been nominated for the Arjuna Award. Hockey India has also nominated RP Singh and Sandeep Kaur for Dhyan Chand Award for Lifetime Achievement, while coaches Baljeet Singh, B S Chauhan and Romesh Pathania have been proposed for Dronacharya Award. Japan: Emperor Naruhito ushers in 'Reiwa Era' with first address

The 126th Emperor of Japan, in his public address on the first day of his reign, promised to "reflect deeply on the course followed" by his father Emperor Emeritus Akihito who abdicated on Tuesday, bringing an end to the 30-year-old Heisei era.The new era under Emperor Naruhito's rule will be known as "Reiwa," comprising the words "Rei", means "good fortune" and "Wa" that can be translated into "peace" and "harmony".Akihito is the first Japanese emperor to abdicate since Kokaku in 1817. Neeraj Chopra nominated for Khel Ratna; Toor, Arpinder for Arjuna Award

Star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, who won a gold in the Asian Games last year with a record throw, has been nominated for the prestigious Rajiv Khel Ratna Award by the Athletics Federation of India. The 21-year-old Neeraj, one of the very few world class track and field athletes India currently has, was awarded the Arjuna Award last year after he won a gold in the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. (retd) Jack Farj Rafael (JFR) Jacob, who negotiated the historic surrender of Pakistani troops in Dhaka after the 1971 Bangladesh's liberation war, with a plaque on the Wall of Honour at the Ammunition Hill here.
