Govt to give boost to panchayat infrastructure, border areas in focus

Seeking to address infrastructure gaps, the Panchayati Raj Ministry has approved a series of proposals for building new panchayat buildings and resource centres and upgrading existing ones across the country. These include a proposal for building around 400 Gram Panchayat buildings in border areas of Arunachal Pradesh, ministry sources said. According to a source, a number of proposals were put forth in the meeting of the Central Empowered Committee (CEC) on the revamped Gram Swaraj Abhiyan earlier this month and were recently approved by the ministry. In the CEC meeting chaired by the Secretary of the Ministry of Panchayati Raj, Vivek Bharadwaj, issues of infrastructure and training for panchayats were in focus. "In a bid to boost Panchayat Infrastructure in the 'Vibrant Villages' in the border areas, the construction of 400 Panchayat Bhawans-cum-Common Service Centres in Arunachal Pradesh has been approved by the Ministry," the source said. India, China begin troop disengagement in Ladakh; to complete by next week

India and China have begun troop disengagement at the two friction points at Demchok and Depsang Plains in eastern Ladakh and this process is likely to get completed by October 28-29, Army sources said on Friday. The process follows an agreement firmed up between the two countries on patrolling and disengagement of troops along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh, a major breakthrough to end the over four-year standoff. Sources said that patrolling will begin at the two friction points once the disengagement is done and both sides will move their respective troops and dismantle temporary structures. Eventually, they added, the patrolling status is expected to move back to pre-April 2020 level. The agreement framework was first agreed upon at the diplomatic level and then military-level talks took place, the army sources said, adding the nitty-gritty of agreement was worked in Corps Commander-level talks. Adhering to agreements between the two sides, Indian troops ha

Broad consensus achieved on restoring ground situation along LAC: Rajnath

A broad consensus has been achieved by India and China on restoring the "ground situation" along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) pursuant to talks, including for patrolling and grazing cattle in traditional areas, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Thursday. Speaking at the Chanakya Defence Dialogue 2024, the defence minister described the pact reached between the two countries as a "significant development" that underscores the importance of defence dialogue on the global stage. "India and China have been involved in talks both at military and diplomatic levels to resolve differences in certain areas along the LAC. Pursuant to the talks, a broad consensus has been achieved to restore the ground situation based on the principle of equal and mutual security," Singh said. "The consensus achieved includes patrolling and grazing (cattle) in traditional areas. This is the power of engaging in continuous dialogue because sooner or later, solutions will emerge," Singh said. Prime ...

Xi Jinping agrees 'in principle' to PM Modi's suggestions on improving ties

Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed "in principle to the suggestions made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during their meeting here on Wednesday to improve India-China relations, state-run Xinhua news agency reported. In his meeting with Modi on the sidelines of the 16th BRICS Summit in the Russian city of Kazan, Xi said China-India relations are essentially a question of how the two large developing countries and neighbours, each with a 1.4-billion-strong population, treat each other. Xi said China and India should maintain a sound strategic perception of each other and work together to find the "right and bright path" for big, neighbouring countries to live in harmony and develop side by side. The two leaders commended the important progress the two sides recently made through intensive communication on resolving the issues in the border areas. Modi made suggestions on improving and developing the relationship, which Xi agreed to in principle," Xinhua news agency reported without

Govt imposes anti-dumping duty on five Chinese products for 5 years

India has imposed anti-dumping duty on five Chinese goods, including glass mirror and cellophane transparent film, for five years to guard domestic players from cheap imports from the neighbouring country. These duties were imposed as these products -- isopropyl alcohol, sulphur black, cellophane transparent film, thermoplastic polyurethane, unframed glass mirror -- were exported to India from China at below normal prices. In five separate notifications, the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs, Department of Revenue, said that the duty imposed "shall be levied for a period of five years". The government has imposed the USD 82 per tonne and USD 217 per tonne duty on different Chinese firms on isopropyl alcohol, which has medical and industrial uses. It is also used as an antiseptic for skin and instrumentation, and hand sanitiser. On imports of sulphur black, whose total imports in 2023-24 was USD 4.3 million, a duty of up to USD 389 per tonne has been imposed. It is used fo

Centre must take people into confidence on China border row: Congress

Days after India and China firmed up an agreement on patrolling by their militaries along the LAC in eastern Ladakh, the Congress on Wednesday said it expects that the disengagement will restore the status quo ante as it existed in March 2020 and asked the government to take the people of India into confidence on the matter. The opposition party's assertion comes ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping's bilateral talks on the margins of the BRICS summit in Russia. Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said many questions remain about the Modi government's announcement that an agreement has been reached with China on patrolling arrangements along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). "The Foreign Secretary has said that this is 'leading to disengagement and eventually a resolution of the issues that had arisen in these areas in 2020'. We hope that India's worst foreign policy setback in decades is being honourably resolved," he
