India, China begin disengagement in Gogra-Hotsprings in eastern Ladakh

In a major development, the Indian and Chinese armies on Thursday announced that they have started to disengage from the Gogra-Hotsprings area in eastern Ladakh, marking an end to an over two-year stand-off in the Patrolling Point 15. The beginning of the disengagement process was an outcome of the 16th round of high-level military talks in July, according to a joint statement by the two armies. "On 8th September 2022, according to the consensus reached in the 16th round of India China Corps Commander level meeting, the Indian and Chinese troops in the area of Gogra-Hotsprings (PP-15) have begun to disengage in a coordinated and planned way, which is conducive to the peace and tranquility in the border areas," the statement said. The announcement of the disengagement process comes around a week ahead of the annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in Uzbekistan which is set to be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping. 'State of border' will determine India-China ties, says EAM Jaishankar

The state of the border will determine the state of the India-China relationship, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Monday, asserting that ties must be based on mutual sensitivity, mutual respect, and mutual interest. The external affairs minister's comments came amid the lingering military standoff between the two countries in a number of friction points in eastern Ladakh. In his address at the launch of the Asia Society Policy Institute, Jaishankar said much of the future of Asia depends on how relations between India and China develop in the foreseeable future and that the continent lacks an agreed architecture of any nature. "For ties to return to a positive trajectory and remain sustainable, they must be based on the three mutuals: mutual sensitivity, mutual respect and mutual interest," he said. "Their current status is, of course, well known to all of you. I can only reiterate that the state of the border will determine the state of the relationship," he ...

Indian graziers stopped by Chinese troops in Demchok area of eastern Ladakh

Indian graziers were stopped by Chinese troops from moving ahead near the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the Demchok region of eastern Ladakh over a week ago, people familiar with the development said on Monday. There was no face-off or confrontation between the Indian and Chinese forces in view of the incident as such objections by both sides happen routinely, they said. The people said some Indian graziers were on the Indian side of the LAC in the region but the Chinese People's Liberation Army(PLA) objected to their presence claiming the area to be on their side. The incident is understood to have taken place on August 21. "Such incidents happen in those areas because of differing perceptions about the LAC by both sides," said one of the people cited above, adding the incident figured in subsequent talks between area commanders of the two armies. The incident took place amid the prolonged military standoff between the two sides at a number of friction points in eastern ...

Dialogue to resolve Ladakh border standoff is effective, says China

Beijing on Friday concurred with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar's observation that an Asian Century cannot happen if India and China don't join hands and said dialogue between the two countries to resolve the eastern Ladakh border standoff is effective. Responding to a series of questions after delivering a lecture on 'India's Vision of the Indo-Pacific' at the prestigious Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok on Thursday, Jaishankar said the relationship between India and China was going through an "extremely difficult phase" after what Beijing had done at the border and emphasised that the Asian Century would not happen if the two neighbours could not join hands. Chinese and Indian troops are engaged in a prolonged standoff in eastern Ladakh. The two sides have so far held 16 rounds of Corps Commander Level talks to resolve the standoff which erupted on May 5, 2020, following a violent clash in the Pangong Lake areas. Asked for his reaction to Jaishankar's comments, Chinese
