UAE to review India's concerns on surge in silver, platinum alloy imports

India has raised its concerns over jump in imports of silver products, platinum alloy, and dry dates from the UAE and urged the country to ensure that the rules are not circumvented under the free trade agreement (FTA), an official statement said on Tuesday. The UAE has agreed to examine the concerns raised by the India, the commerce ministry said. Following significant increase in imports, India sought review of certain provisions of the FTA with the UAE that came into force on May 1, 2022. The concerns were raised during the second meeting of the joint committee (JC) under the India-UAE Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) in the UAE on October 14. India eases certain conditions for UAE in bilateral investment treaty: GTRI

India has eased certain conditions for UAE in the bilateral investment treaty by including portfolio investments and reduction in the local remedies exhaustion period from five years to three years in the pact, economic think tank GTRI said on Monday. The India-UAE Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT) came into force on August 31 this year. The model BIT requires investors to attempt to resolve disputes through India's legal system for at least five years before seeking international arbitration. In contrast, the India-UAE BIT reduces this period to three years, giving investors quicker access to Investor-State Dispute Settlement (ISDS). "While this makes the treaty more investor-friendly, it also weakens India's ability to settle disputes domestically, increasing the likelihood of arbitration cases that could challenge India's regulatory decisions," the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) said in a statement. Govt permits 64,400 tonnes of onion exports to UAE, Bangladesh via NCEL

The government has permitted exports of 64,400 tonnes of onion to the UAE and Bangladesh through the National Cooperative Exports Ltd (NCEL), according to notifications of the commerce ministry. While export of 50,000 tonnes of onion is permitted to Bangladesh, shipments of 14,400 tonnes were allowed to the UAE. "Export of 14,400 tonnes of onions, with a quantity ceiling of 3,600 MT (metric tonnes) quarterly, to UAE through NCEL is notified," the directorate general of foreign trade (DGFT) said in a notification. DGFT is an arm of the commerce ministry, which deals with norms related to imports and exports. For exports to Bangladesh, it said that the modalities for the exports will be worked out by the NCEL in consultation with the department of consumer affairs. Though onion exports are banned, the government allows specified quantities to friendly nations. Cabinet approves signing of India-UAE Bilateral Investment Treaty

The government on Thursday approved the signing and ratification of a Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT) between India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The pact would help promote investments between the two countries. "The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, today has given its approval for signing and ratification of BIT between India and the UAE," an official statement said. The treaty is expected to improve the confidence of investors, especially large investors, resulting in an increase in foreign investments and overseas direct investment (ODI) opportunities, the statement said, adding that this may have a positive impact on employment generation.
