US vice prez Kamala Harris' achievements inspiration for all women: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has applauded Vice President Kamala Harris for her achievements, saying she was an inspiration to women across the world including India and the United States. Modi also heaped praise on Harris' mother and said she kept her relationship with India alive despite living thousands of miles away. Madam Vice President, you have taken this inspiration today to newer heights. Your achievements are an inspiration to not only the women in America but to women in India and women all across the world. This is really inspiring, Modi said in his remarks at a State Department luncheon hosted in his honor by Harris and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken Friday. In his remarks, Modi referred to the inspirational journey of the Indian-American mother of the vice president. Vice President Kamala Harris' mother, Dr Shyamala Gopalan, came to America from India in 1958. At that time, most people did not have phones and so her mother would send handwritten letters to her .

Biden endorsed by 4 environmental groups for efforts against global warming

President Joe Biden told an audience of conservation and environmental groups Wednesday that their work has never been more important at a time when they are battling the greatest threat facing future generations. Speaking at the annual Capital Dinner of the League of Conservation Voters, Biden told the supportive audience there are "a lot of threats to our children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren" but climate change "is the only truly existential threat". He said the audience members and his administration had done good work in combatting the threat but everyone needed to "finish the job". Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were endorsed by four environmental and conservation groups at the dinner: the League of Conservation Voters Action Fund, NextGen PAC, NRDC Action Fund and the Sierra Club. Speakers for the organisations praised the Biden-Harris team as the administration that has done the most to combat climate change. In earlier comments, former House Speaker Nanc

Harris to be 1st woman to give commencement speech at US Military Academy

Vice President Kamala Harris on Saturday will become the first woman to deliver a commencement address at the U.S. Military Academy, an institution that has made slow progress diversifying its ranks in the four decades since the first class of female cadets graduated. This year some 950 men and women are expected to take part in the graduation ceremony in West Point, New York. While Harris visits West Point, about 60 miles (96 kilometers) north of Manhattan, President Joe Biden heads to Colorado Springs, Colorado, on Thursday to address graduates at the U.S. Air Force Academy. Vice presidents typically travel to one of the federal service academies to address graduating classes. Harris' visit will be her first to the U.S. Army academy. Today, about one quarter of the student body are women. Only a few dozen graduates each year are Black women, like Harris, though the number has ticked up in recent years. The academy didn't admit women until 1976 and had its first female graduates i

Biden, Harris meet top donors to raise funds for 2024 election campaign

US President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris over the weekend met his top 150 donors, including one Indian-American entrepreneur, to develop a successful strategy to raise funds for their 2024 re-election campaign, participants of the meeting said. During the event, Biden highlighted the importance of donors and their contribution to preserving democracy, while lambasting former president Donald Trump-led "MAGA Republicans" and emphasising abortion rights. Although the reception was not a fundraiser, it marked a new effort to bring in untapped donors into the fold, participants of the meeting said. Leading Indian-American fundraiser, Ajay Jain Bhutoria, who is the Democratic Party deputy national finance chair, was among the 150 major Democratic donors to attend the meeting in Washington DC. It is understood that the campaign has set a target of raising USD 2 billion for the 2024 re-election campaign. The event marked the first in-person donor conference of Biden's 2024

Kamala Harris faces new test of political skills in US poll 2024 campaign

She swaggered, she jabbed, she inspired. She even joked. Anyone looking for a glimpse of what Vice President Kamala Harris could bring to the campaign trail would have found it this week at Howard University, where she headlined a rally for reproductive rights. After two years of tightly scripted, uneven performances that often dismayed Democrats and cheered Republicans, Harris is looser, more forceful and more willing to speak off the cuff following her trip to Africa a month ago. That is the vice president that America is going to get a chance to get to know for the first time, said Laphonza Butler, a former adviser to Harris who leads EMILY's List. Now Harris, the first woman and person of color in her position, will be put to the test as President Joe Biden seeks a second term. Although vice presidents are rarely decisive in reelection efforts, Harris is poised to be an exception. Not only is she leading the charge on Democrats' most potent issue, the battle over abortion righ

Kamala Harris announces $562 mn for climate resilience in Florida

Returning to Florida to discuss climate change, Vice President Kamala Harris announced on Friday that USD 562 million will be spent on 149 projects around the country aimed at improving resilience to threats such as rising seas and the kinds of coastal flooding that recently slammed the southeast part of the state. Harris outlined the funding plan during an appearance at the University of Miami, where she also toured a lab immersed in coral restoration work and a hurricane simulator capable of generating Category 5-strength winds of more than 157 mph (253 kph). Harris, who appeared in March at a Miami Beach climate summit, said the projects, which are spread across 30 states, are an example of how climate investments boost job creation and manufacturing while tackling a major environmental issue. "When we invest in climate, we not only protect our environment, we also strengthen our economy," Harris said in a tweet during her Miami visit. The funding is part of what the Biden ...

VP Kamala Harris rallies as high court eyes abortion pill rules in country

Vice President Kamala Harris on Saturday urged Americans to take action during a critical point in our nation's history as thousands of protesters demonstrated across the country against new limits to abortion rights making their way through the courts. Saturday's nationwide rallies were sparked by the U.S. Supreme Court's actions the day before, when the high court intervened to delay rule changes that would have limited the way the abortion drug mifepristone could be used and dispensed. The limits were paused while the court reviews the case more thoroughly. Harris made a surprise stop in Los Angeles at one of the rallies, where she called the latest upheaval over abortion rights a further incursion by conservatives into myriad fundamental rights many Americans thought they had. And so this is a moment that history will show required each of us based on our collective love of our country to stand up, and fight for, and protect our ideals. That's what this moment is, she said ...

Harris pledges aid to Ghana amid security, economic concerns

With fears of terrorism and Russian mercenaries rippling through West Africa, Vice President Kamala Harris on Monday opened her weeklong trip to the continent by vowing support for Ghana, a democratic pillar in the region that's being squeezed by an economic crisis and security concerns. The visit was a high-profile show of support for Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo, who faces rising discontent over inflation after previously overseeing one of the world's fast-growing economies. Under your leadership, Ghana has been a beacon of democracy and a contributor to global peace and security, Harris said during a joint press conference at the Jubilee House, the presidential palace in Accra. Harris announced $100 million in assistance for the region and pledged that the United States would be strengthening our partnerships across the continent of Africa. The administration also is requesting another $139 million from Congress to help Ghana reduce child labor, improve weather forecasting,
