SC adjourns state govt plea against pre-arrest bail to Bhavani Revanna

The Supreme Court on Friday adjourned for two weeks a Karnataka government plea seeking the cancellation of anticipatory bail granted to Bhavani Revanna, the mother of suspended JD(S) leader and rape accused Prajwal Revanna, in a kidnapping case involving one of the victims allegedly sexually assaulted by her son. A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan asked advocate Balaji Srinivasan, appearing for Revanna, to file an affidavit giving the details of the status of the case. Srinivasan submitted that a charge sheet has been filed in the case, other accused have been granted bail and Bhavani Revanna has cooperated with the investigation. The bench said it will not go into the merits of the matter and asked Srinivasan to file an affidavit. The court then adjourned the matter for two weeks. On July 10, the top court refused to set aside the anticipatory bail granted to Bhavani Revanna in the case and sought her response on the appeal filed by the Karnataka government challeng

K'taka HC slams delay in trial of Pocso case, says system put to shame

The Karnataka High Court has said that the entire criminal justice system was put to shame as the trial in a case of rape and murder of a five-year-old girl has been pending for the past seven years. The Protection Of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, specifically mandates conclusion of the trial within a year, as far as possible. The High Court observed that delay in such cases, where the offences are heinous based on facts that are 'horrendous', is a sad reflection of the legal and judicial system. It also pointed out that though Section 35(2) of the POCSO Act mandates completion within one year, there are many cases pending before the trial courts concerned. Justice M Nagaprasanna made these observations while stating that though cognisance in the criminal case was taken against the two accused persons in 2017 itself, the offenders are yet to be brought to justice. One of the accused, Chandana, had moved the High Court for recalling nine witnesses for ...

Confident will get justice: K'taka CM after HC reserves stance on his plea

A day after Karnataka High Court completed hearing and reserved its verdict on his petition challenging legality of Governor's approval for investigation against him in a site allotment case, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday said he is confident of getting justice, as he has committed no wrong. Terming as "false" the allegations against him -- illegalities in the allotment of 14 sites to his wife in a layout by the Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA) --, he asserted that he will do no wrong in the future too, and that his life was an open book. "...let them (the opposition) lie, we won't care for it. They are making false allegations against me. I have respect for the law of this land, I have respect for the court's verdicts, I'm confident about getting justice, because I have committed no wrong," Siddaramaiah said. Addressing an event at Magadi on the city outskirts, he said: "I have done no wrong, will not do it, and will not do it in the future too. It has been 40 ..

Three more people have been held in connection with the clashes that broke out between two groups during a Lord Ganesh idol procession, police said on Friday. The situation in Nagamangala town in Mandya district has returned to normal two days after the clashes on Wednesday following which mobs went on a rampage targeting several shops and vehicles leading to tension. Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara on Wednesday said the committee of Ministers -- formed to review and coordinate regarding the action to be taken in connection with probe by government and investigating agencies into various scams that have taken place during the previous BJP government -- is likely to meet this week. Cong chief to rein in leaders weighing in for CM post: K'taka minister

Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara on Wednesday said the Congress state President D K Shivakumar will respond to calls by some party leaders to rein in those weighing in for the Chief Minister post, in the event of leadership change in the state. As Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's petition challenging the Governor's sanction for his prosecution in a site allotment case is being heard in the High Court, Congress leaders seem to be preparing for a race to become CM with several of them openly expressing their desire. A group of Congress leaders on Tuesday wrote to Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi requesting him to warn party leaders including senior Ministers, who are weighing in for the Chief Minister's post, in the event of leadership change. The signatories of the letter, including current and former lawmakers and some ex-Ministers, have also asked him to direct them not to issue damaging statements in future. Renukaswamy murder case: HC restricts media from publishing chargesheet

The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday issued an ex-parte interim order barring media outlets from broadcasting, printing, or publishing any information from the chargesheet against Kannada actor Darshan Thoogudeepa, who is accused along with 16 others in the Renukaswamy murder case. 'The restriction will remain in place until the next hearing. Justice Hemant Chandangoudar, presiding over a single-judge bench, passed the order following a plea by the 47-year-old actor, who requested the court to restrain media organisations from disseminating confidential details contained in the chargesheet and other materials gathered during the investigation. The case is pending before a Magistrate court. The High Court noted that despite an injunction issued by a lower court on August 27 in a suit filed by Darshan's wife Vijayalakshmi, media outlets continued to share confidential information. Finding merit in the petitioner's arguments, the court ordered media outlets, identified as respondents 3

Chargesheet in public domain will not impact proceedings: K'taka minister

Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara on Tuesday said details of the chargesheet in the Renukaswamy murder case, in which Kannada actor Darshan Thoogudeepa and 16 others are accused, coming out in the public domain, will not have any impact on court proceedings. He said based on the chargesheet submitted and evidence given by the police to the court concerned, the case will proceed further. "No, they will go by the documents. Just because someone speaks something in the public domain, the court doesn't take it into cognisance. They will go by the merits of the case based on documents and evidence that are there," Parameshwara said, when asked if the chargesheet information coming out will have any influence on further probe. Police last week submitted to the court a 3,991-page preliminary chargesheet in the case. Responding to a question on objections regarding information from the chargesheet coming out and Darshan moving the court in this regard, the Minister said: "Once the ...
