Two people allegedly involved in the rape and killing of a 64-year-old woman in West Bengal have been arrested from the city's Colaba area, police said. ' Subhankar Sikdar (35) and Govind Sarkar (28) were arrested near Regal Cinema in Colaba on Friday, police said. Police said that, on May 7, the two had entered into an argument with the victim in Cooper's Camp area of Ranaghat subdivision in West Bengal's Nadia district. The two assaulted the 64-year-old woman and rendered her unconscious following which the two accused allegedly raped her, police said. When the victim regained consciousness and cried out for help, Sikdar and Sarkar strangled her to death, police said. "After killing her, the two fled to Mumbai on May 10," said Sukhlal Varpe, Senior Inspector of Mata Ramabai Ambedkar Marg police station. He added that the two were produced before a court which remanded them in police custody, Varpe said.
The Gujarat CID today moved a local court for issuance of an arrest warrant against former BJP MLA Nalin Kotadiya, claiming that he was not honouring summons and was evading arrest in a kidnapping and extortion case. The CID told the local court that the former BJP MLA played a significant role in the crime and, hence, needed to be arrested. Kotadiya, a former MLA from Dhari in Amreli district, is an accused in a bitcoin (a virtual currency) extortion case in which several police officials, including a superintendent of police and an inspector of the local crime branch, have been arrested. The Centre today told the Supreme Court that senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi has been appointed as an eminent jurist in the selection committee for appointment of anti-graft ombudsman Lokpal. Attorney General K K Venugopal told a bench comprising Justices Ranjan Gogoi and R Banumathi that the decision to appoint Rohatgi as an eminent jurist in the selection committee, headed by the Prime Minister, was taken on May 11. Rohatgi was appointed the Attorney General of India on June 19, 2014, soon after the Narendra Modi government assumed power in May. He quit the post in June last year. The post of eminent jurist in the Lokpal selection panel was lying vacant since the death of senior advocate P P Rao on September 11, 2017. Four labourers were killed and two others sustained serious injuries when a wall of a residential complex, where renovation work was going on, collapsed on them at Voharwad in Dhanera town in Banaskantha district, police said. "Renovation work was going on in the residential building located in Voharwad locality in Dhanera. Six labourers were re-constructing a wall when a neighbouring wall collapsed on them, killing four of them on the spot," a Dhanera police station official said. The deceased were identified as Amrutbhai Thakor, Davabhai Majirana, Khemabhai Thakor and Hansabhai Harijan. The injured duo was rushed to a Dhanera-based hospital, where they are currently undergoing treatment. Based on a complaint lodged by a relative of one of the deceased, the police have booked building contractor Pravinbhai Suthar and engineer Sanket Mehta under IPC section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder). The Delhi High Court on Tuesday directed Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to investigate alleged assault and physical torture on several prisoners lodged in the high-risk ward of Tihar jail.The court had earlier indicated that it might direct lodging of FIR against the prison officials, who had allegedly subjected several prisoners to severe physical torture at the Tihar Jail.The court today clearly said that an act does not decriminalize if it is done by a person in uniform.The court was hearing a PIL which alleged that prisoner Shahid Husuf, currently being investigated by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and undergoing trial, was beaten up without any reason by the Tihar Jail staff.So, the court directed the authorities to ensure safety and security of the jail inmates.

The Delhi High Court today sought response of the Delhi University and Bar Council of India (BCI) on a PIL for allowing students detained by the varsity due to lack of attendance, to sit for their ongoing semester examinations. A bench of Justices S Ravindra Bhat and A K Chawla issued notice to DU and the apex lawyers' body BCI, and sought their stand on the allegation made in the petition that classes in three centres of the Law Faculty were not held according to the legal education rules framed by the Bar Council. In the plea filed on behalf of the detained law students, advocate Tarun Narang claimed that DU Law Faculty's three centres -- Campus Law Centre (CLC), Law Centre 1 (LC1) and Law Centre 2 (LC2) -- have arbitrarily, illegally and without issuing any show-cause notice detained hundreds of law students. The body of the woman, in her 20s, was found in central Delhi yesterday and the police were also suspecting sexual assault, though an autopsy was yet to be carried out. The DCW, in its notice, issued to Daryaganj police has sought to know if guards were manning the park where her body was found, and how the deceased and her killer obtained entry into the park at night. A 35-year-old Nigerian, who allegedly cheated a city resident of Rs 2.22 lakh in a matrimonial fraud, was arrested, a police official said today. A police team arrested Osazee Russ Ediagbonya in New Delhi and brought him here two days ago, the official said. Ediagbonya duped the victim, who had posted his profile on a matrimonial website, by sending him a proposal by posing himself as a woman named Biya Babar, a medical practitioner, working in the US, he said. Through whatsapp, the accused informed the victim that she would come to India on March 14 to meet him, the official said. On March 14, the victim received a call from a person claiming to be a customs officer working in the New Delhi airport and told him that Dr Biya has been caught carrying half a million USD, he said. Five men, who used to rob people attending marriage functions, were arrested here, police said today. The five accused were identified as Rahul (22), Shadab alias Guddu (22), Deepak (22), Ubesh (23) and Murtaza (19), they added. A special NIA court here sentenced 18 SIMI members, including its leader Safdar Nagori, to seven years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) today, after they were found guilty of organising an arms training camp for the members of the banned outfit in Kerala in 2007. Special NIA court Judge Kauser Edappagath also sentenced the convicts to varying terms of imprisonment under different sections of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), the Explosive Substances Act (ESA) and section 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The Haryana Police has busted a gang of thieves with the arrest of three of its members today, an official said. The three accused were produced in the court and taken on one day police remand, he said. The police recovered a 315 bore country made pistol, 69 live cartridges and an iron rod from them. In a setback to Google India, the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal has upheld a tax demand on the search engine's remittances of advertisement revenue to Google Ireland Ltd. The Bangalore bench of ITAT, in a 331-page order, upheld the tax department's contention that such payments are royalty and therefore subject to withholding tax. Google India said it will challenge the ruling in the High Court. The company had filed an appeal in the ITAT against "characterization of the payment made by it to Google Ireland Ltd in respect of the purchase of advertisement space for resale to the advertisers in India under the Google AdWords programme distribution agreements". For the assessment year 2012-13, the tax department had found Rs 1,114.91 crore to have been credited to Google Ireland Ltd (GIL) without deduction of tax at source. One person was killed and a policeman injured after a constable opened fire inside the premises of the police lines here today, police said. The incident happened this morning under the jurisdiction of Buddha Colony police station, the police said. The constable shot dead his brother-in-law and one policeman received a bullet injury when he was trying to catch the constable for opening fire, a police officer said. A trainee constable, in a fit of rage, opened fire from his service weapon during an argument with his brother-in-law, the Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) of Patna Central, D Amarkesh, said. When other policemen tried to stop him, he opened fire at them also, the ASP said. He said, the constable's brother-in-law was rushed to a hospital where he succumbed to injuries. The constable was overpowered by other policemen on the spot, he added. The trainee constable has been arrested and an investigation has been initiated, the ASP said.
