The Congress has convened a meeting of all 230 candidates on Tuesday to discuss the defeat in the Madhya Pradesh assembly elections and the reasons behind the poor performance, party leaders said. Madhya Pradesh Congress chief Kamal Nath maintained his several decade-old stranglehold on Chhindwara even as the Bharatiya Janata Party retained power in the state with an emphatic win. Nath defeated the BJP's Vivek Bunty Sahu by 36,594 votes. In the 2018 polls, Nath's victory margin against Sahu was 25,837 votes. Since 1980, Nath has won the Chhindwara Lok Sabha seat a record nine times.
Union Minister Narendra Singh Tomar defeated the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) candidate Balveer Singh Dandotiya by 24,461 votes in Dimani in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly polls. Tomar is among the three Union ministers who were fielded in the Assembly polls by the Bharatiya Janata Party. Tomar held different posts before becoming the state president of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha in 1991. In 1998 and 2003, Tomar was elected from Gwalior Assembly seat and became a cabinet minister in the state government. He was appointed the state BJP president in 2006 and was on the post again between 2012 and 2014. Tomar was elected to the Lok Sabha from Morena in 2008 and again from Gwalior in 2014 and was made a minister in the Narendra Modi government. He won the general elections in 2019 from Morena and was once again made a minister at the Centre.

Taking a dig at the Congress for its dismal show in the assembly polls, the Samajwadi Party on Sunday blamed grand old party leader Kamal Nath's "indecent statement" against its chief Akhilesh Yadav for the setback in Madhya Pradesh. The Congress' Arif Masood and Atif Arif Aqueel won the Assembly polls from Bhopal Central and Bhopal North, respectively, in Madhya Pradesh. Another Muslim leader from the Congress, Nafees Mansha, who had contested from the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen after being denied a ticket by the grand old party, however, lost from Burhanpur. Masood defeated the Bharatiya Janata Party's Dhruv Narayan Sing by a margin of 15891 votes from Bhopal Central, while Aqueel won against the ruling party's Alok Sharma by 26,987 votes from Bhopal North. In Burhanpur, Mansha garnered 33,853 votes, which was higher than the victory margin of BJP's Archana Chitnis against her nearest rival from the Congress Thakur Surendra Singh. Chitnis defeated Singh by 31,171 votes. As per an estimate, Muslims, at 50 lakh, constitute some 7 per cent of MP's population, and are mainly concentrated in Bhopal and the Malwa region.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan won from Budhni seat for a sixth time by defeating Congress' actor-turned-politician Vikram Mastal by a margin of 1,04,974 votes. Chouhan, the longest serving CM of MP, first won from Budhni Assembly seat in 1990, before winning a bypoll in 2006 and retaining the seat in 2008,2013 and 2018. Chouhan was also Lok Sabha MP from Vidisha in 1991, 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2004. Fondly called 'mama' by his supporters, Chouhan was not projected as the party's CM face this time.
