India's key defender and first rusher Amit Rohidas will miss Tuesday's Olympic men's hockey semifinal against Germany after the country's appeal against his one-match suspension, for being red-carded in the quarterfinal, was rejected by the international body FIH. This means India will have only 15 players available for the key clash, which is a big setback for the eight-time Olympic champions. "Amit Rohidas was suspended for one match for a breach of the FIH Code of Conduct which occurred during the India vs Great Britain match on August 4," a FIH statement read. "The suspension affects match No. 35 (India's semi-final match against Germany), where Amit Rohidas will not participate and India will play with a squad of 15 players only." Hockey India had lodged an appeal against Rohidas' suspension but the International Hockey Federation (FIH) Jury Bench rejected it. "...after inspection and deliberations, HI's appeal has been rejected and Amit will not play the semifinal." Rohidas
American gymnast Simone Biles didn't get the golden sendoff she sought. Biles earned silver in the floor exercise finals on Monday her 11th Olympic medal after a routine that included a couple of costly steps out of bounds. Brazil's Rebeca Andrade became the first gymnast to beat Biles in a floor final in a major international competition, posting a score of 14.166 that finished just ahead of Biles at 14.133. Jordan Chiles, a longtime friend and teammate of Biles, earned the bronze. The 27-year-old Biles, considered the greatest in the history of the sport, wasn't at her usual best during a routine set to music from pop icons Taylor Swift and Beyonce. Still, she boosted her medal haul in Paris to four gold in the team, all-around and vault finals and a silver that came as a surprise in her signature event. I can't be more proud of how I've done," Biles said. I'm 27 years old walking away from this Games with four medals to add to my collection. Not mad about it. Biles' medal
Sam Kendricks appreciates the Olympics again. Valarie Allman never stopped. It's just the healing power that medals have to mend and reinforce feelings. In a short span Monday night, Allman won her second straight Olympic title in the discus throw, while Kendricks captured silver in a pole vault competition that featured Sweden's Armand Mondo Duplantis breaking his own world record. The medals from Allman and Kendricks, 31, gave the U.S. 11 so far in the meet, including three golds. Three years ago in Tokyo, Kendricks didn't get the chance to compete. He was placed in isolation because of a positive COVID-19 test and didn't feel supported by Olympic officials. It led to some pretty hard feelings feelings that had the Mississippi native wondering if he even wanted to compete in Paris. His love-loathe relationship is back on path to love after he earned a silver medal. It pairs with the bronze he captured at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games. I was definitely bitter, Kendricks said.
In the wake of a Chinese doping scandal, Michael Phelps doubled down Monday on his support for tougher sanctions including a lifetime ban for anyone who tests positive for a banned substance. If you test positive, you should never be allowed to come back and compete again, cut and dry, Phelps said. I believe one and done. The World Anti-Doping Agency and World Aquatics have acknowledged that 23 Chinese swimmers tested positive for a banned substance ahead of the Tokyo Olympics. The results were not made public until media reports surfaced this year, with both bodies accepting the Chinese explanation that the positive tests were caused by tainted food. Nine of those swimmers won medals - several as part of relay teams - n Paris, leading British star Adam Peaty to gripe that the playing field was not even. Phelps reiterated those sentiments, saying the Chinese swimmers who tested positive should not have been allowed to compete in either Tokyo or Paris. Or anywhere else, for that .
Juanlu Sanchez came off the bench to fire Spain to a record-equaling fifth Olympic men's soccer final. Sanchez struck in the 85th minute at Stade de Marseille to seal a 2-1 win over Morocco and set up a final against France at the Paris Games. The moment passed so fast that I didn't even realize it, but then when you realized that you scored the goal that puts your team in the final, well, I'm really happy," Sanchez said. Morocco led 1-0 at halftime after the tournament's leading scorer, Soufiane Rahimi, converted a penalty in the 37th. Spain evened the score in the 65th when Fermin Lopez showed quick feet in the box and hit a left-footed shot low in the bottom corner. The Barcelona midfielder then provided the assist that set up Sanchez to sweep his winning goal into the far corner. I think that my goal changed a bit the match, and I think it was a great match for the whole team and we deserved it," Lopez said. "And here we are. Spain, which won gold at the 1992 Barcelona Olympi
On the Champ de Mars, where the first mayor of Paris was sent to the guillotine during the Reign of Terror, the American beach volleyball squad got cut in half. Two U.S. teams fell on the sand at Eiffel Tower Stadium on Monday, with Taryn Kloth and Kristen Nuss losing to Canada in the women's round of 16 a few hours after Chase Budinger and Miles Evans lost to Norway in the men's. Only Miles Partain and Andy Benesh advanced on the day, joining Kelly Cheng and Sara Hughes in the elite eight. Definitely a little heartbroken, said Nuss, who along with her former LSU teammate formed the No. 2 team in the world rankings. We came in wanting to bring home gold back to the United States. That's been our goal for the past four years. So to go out in the round of 16 is obviously an earlier exit than we would have liked. Brandie Wilkerson and Melissa Humana-Paredes beat Nuss and Kloth 21-19, 21-18, leaving the country that has won four of the last five women's gold medals with just one team i
Yaroslava Mahuchikh, the Ukrainian world-record high jumper, may have just won Olympic gold, but she and other winning athletes from Ukraine are not resting in Paris they're trying to shine the spotlight on the war tearing apart their country. "The Olympic Games are about peace, she said. But Russia didn't stop, and during these Games, there were massive attacks on Ukrainian cities. These missile strikes forced Mahuchikh to spend the last two and a half years mostly abroad as she focused on her main goal the Olympic gold, which she won Sunday. She trained far from her family, including in Portugal, Estonia, Belgium and Germany. She occasionally comes to her hometown of Dnipro in eastern Ukraine, but every time she left the country, she didn't know when she would return. To achieve such high results on the international stage, you need to train abroad, Mahuchikh said. And it is very sad, and I really want us to be able to train fully at home for the next Olympic cycle. Despite th

Only the top 10 in terms of timing after all the qualifying races get into the medal round. After the eighth qualifying race, she was placed 24th and on Monday, she improved upon her previous few days of shoddy show to finish a creditable 10th among 43 in the ninth qualifying race. Novak Djokovic won his first Olympic gold medal by beating Carlos Alcaraz 7-6 (3), 7-6 (2) in an enthralling men's tennis singles final Sunday, giving the 37-year-old from Serbia the last significant accomplishment missing from his glittering resume. Djokovic's impressive career already featured a men's-record 24 Grand Slam titles and the most weeks spent at No. 1 in the rankings by any man or woman. It also already contained a Summer Olympics medal, from 2008, but it was a bronze and he has made clear that simply was not sufficient. Until he got past bronze medalist Lorenzo Musetti of Italy in the semifinals Friday, Djokovic was 0-3 in that round at the Games. He lost to the eventual gold winner each time: Rafael Nadal at Beijing in 2008, Andy Murray at London in 2012, and Alexander Zverev in Tokyo three years ago. In Paris, wearing a gray sleeve over the right knee that required surgery for a torn meniscus two months ago, Djokovic faced Nadal in the second round and eliminated hi
