Manipur Police have denied the existence of 'Kuki Zo Village Volunteers Eastern Zone' group which had issued a directive threatening members of the Meitei community against entering Kuki areas during the upcoming state-level tourism event of 'Shirui Lily Festival'. In a statement, police said, "It has come to the notice of Manipur Police that a press statement dated 11th May 2025 issued by one unknown organisation Kuki Zo Village Volunteer-Eastern Zone (KZVV-EZ), is being circulated on social media and local vernaculars. The unknown organisation has warned members of the Meitei community against entering or crossing Kuki-inhabited areas for the upcoming Shirui Festival." Following an enquiry by the district police, no such organisation has been found, it said, requesting the general public "not to believe such unfounded and baseless press note issued by the unknown organisation". The Bombay High Court on Friday came down heavily on the Maharashtra government for not registering an FIR against five policemen over the custodial death of Akshay Shinde, accused in the Badlapur school sexual assault case, despite the court's explicit orders. The HC had on April 7 said when a prima facie offence is disclosed, it is mandatory for the police to register a case. The court had constituted a special investigation team under the supervision of Lakhmi Gautam, Joint Commissioner of Police, Crime. It had also directed the state Criminal Investigation Department (CID), which was probing Shinde's death in police custody, to hand over all case documents to Gautam within two days. The Meghalaya Police on Sunday claimed to have busted a criminal network facilitating illegal entry into the country and identity forgery, with the arrest of three suspected Bangladesh nationals from Mumbai. The three accused, including a woman, were nabbed from Koparkhairane, Ulwe and Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Marg in South Mumbai, after a week-long hunt by police personnel of Meghalaya and Maharashtra, a senior officer said. He said police recovered forged documents, incriminating digital evidence and tools used for fabricating IDs. The accused were brought to Meghalaya on transit remand for further investigation, Ri-Bhoi District SSP Vivekanand Singh Rathore told PTI. The court on Saturday accepted the closure report filed by police after examining it and recording statements by the complainant, it said. "Police officials have filed a closure report as the allegations against him have been found to be baseless and false. Odisha CM Mohan Charan Majhi on Wednesday announced that his government would fill over 12,000 vacant posts in the police department. Majhi made the announcement after returning from New Delhi, where he met Union Home Minister Amit Shah, besides hosting a two-day investors' conclave. The Calcutta High Court on Friday directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to submit the case diary initially prepared by the Kolkata Police in connection with the rape-murder of an on-duty doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. A single-judge bench of Justice Tirthankar Ghosh also instructed the CBI to present a list of individuals interviewed in the case at the next hearing scheduled for April 23. The CBI submitted a sealed status report on its ongoing probe into the incident, where the doctor's body was discovered in the seminar room of the hospital on August 9, 2024. The court had transferred the case from Kolkata Police to the CBI on August 13. The CBI counsel said he also brought the case diary as directed by the court during the previous hearing. Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday reviewed the progress in the implementation of three new criminal laws in the northeast (NE) and said the police forces in the region should focus more on ensuring the rights of people. Shah took stock of the implementation and the present status of various new provisions related to police, prisons, courts, prosecution and forensics in the northeastern states. "For a long time, the police in the northeast primarily focused on fighting insurgency. However, with insurgency now nearly eradicated in the region, the police should shift their focus towards protecting people's lives, property and dignity," Shah said in the meeting. In a post on X, Shah said that he had directed the states to monitor the progress and instructed the police forces to focus more on securing the rights of the citizens. According to an official release, he said that the stronger the director of prosecution is made, the easier it will be to ensure justice for the people.
