India has showed that there is no irreconcilable trade-off between growth and distributive justice, and the government is making all efforts to further boost the country's position as a growth engine, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Saturday. In an address at the annual general meeting of FICCI, Singh said India, as the fastest growing major economy in the world, has now reached a position to trigger a "positive impact" on the growth of other countries. "India showed that there is no irreconcilable trade-off between growth and distributive justice. That means providing fair opportunities to all citizens and accelerating the growth rate and both can be achieved simultaneously," he said. "The government is making all efforts to further strengthen India's position as a growth engine. But you know that the government cannot do this work alone. For that we also need the support of the wealth creators and thought leaders of this country," he told the industry captains. Singh said

Rahul's aircraft denied landing permission at Naval airport: Congress

The Congress alleged on Friday that the Ministry of Defence denied landing permission for an aircraft carrying party leader Rahul Gandhi at the Naval airport here. Ernakulam DCC president Mohammed Shiyas alleged the Ministry had initially granted permission for the aircraft's landing at the Naval facility but later withdrew it. Consequently, the aircraft, carrying Gandhi from Kannur, was directed to the Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) in nearby Nedumbassery, he told PTI. An official source told PTI that the decision regarding granting permission for the landing of private jets at the Naval Station was made by the Defence Ministry. He, however, did not elaborate. The former Congress chief, currently touring Kerala, has two programmes scheduled in Kochi on Friday.

Centre approves procurement of 97 Tejas jets, over 150 Prachand choppers

India on Thursday accorded an initial approval to procure an additional batch of 97 Tejas light combat aircraft and around 150 Prachand helicopters to boost the overall combat capability of the armed forces, official sources said. The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) headed by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also cleared a proposal of the Indian Air Force to upgrade its Su-30 fighter fleet, the sources said. It is learnt that mega procurement projects and the Su-30 upgrade programme are expected to cost the exchequer Rs 1.3 lakh crore. The defence ministry is expected to provide the details of the projects cleared by the DAC soon.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday unveiled the crest of Indian Navy's stealth guided missile destroyer Imphal that is equipped with BrahMos surface-to-surface missiles and anti-submarine indigenous rocket launchers. The ship was delivered to the Indian Navy on October 20 by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), Mumbai. The crest unveiling ceremony in Delhi was graced by Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh, Chief of Defence Staff Gen Anil Chauhan and Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar. INS Imphal is the third of the four Project 15B stealth guided missile destroyers. The crest design depicts the Kangla Palace on the left and 'Kangla-Sa' on the right. The unveiling of Imphal's crest, adorned with the Kangla Palace and Kangla-Sa is a befitting tribute to the sacrifice made by the people of Manipur towards India's independence, sovereignty and security, the defence ministry said. Rajnath Singh, Australian counterpart hold talks to boost defence ties

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday held talks with his Australian counterpart Richard Marles during which they concurred that a strong bilateral defence partnership will "augur well" not just for the two countries but also for the overall security of the Indo-Pacific, officials said. The two ministers agreed that deepening cooperation in defence industry and research would "give a fillip to the already strong relationship", according to a statement issued by the Indian defence ministry here. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh paid a brief visit to Singapore on Saturday on his way back from Indonesia.
