Having a family expensive. Here's what Harris, Trump say about easing costs

The high cost of caring for children and the elderly has forced women out of the workforce, devastated family finances and left professional caretakers in low-wage jobs all while slowing economic growth. That families are suffering is not up for debate. As the economy emerges as a theme in this presidential election, the Democratic and Republican candidates have sketched out ideas for easing costs that reveal their divergent views about family. On this topic, the two tickets have one main commonality: Both of the presidential candidates and their running mates have, at one point or another, backed an expanded child tax credit. Vice President Kamala Harris, who accepted the Democratic Party's nomination last week, has signaled that she plans to build on the ambitions of outgoing President Joe Biden's administration, which sought to pour billions in taxpayer dollars into making child care and home care for elderly and disabled adults more affordable. She has not etched any of those

Kamala Harris only Democratic candidate to qualify for prez nomination race

Vice President Kamala Harris has sealed her Democratic presidential nomination as she emerged as the only candidate to qualify for virtual roll call votes from the party's delegates from across the country. As many as 3,923 delegates from across the country petitioned to put Harris, 59, on the ballot for the Democratic nomination, and she secured the support of 99 per cent of the participating delegates, the Democratic Party announced Tuesday night after the official deadline. In a joint statement, Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chair Jaime Harrison and the Democratic National Convention Committee (DNCC) Chair Minyon Moore said no other candidate met the threshold of 300 delegate signatures to qualify for the ballot. The chairs said that voting on the virtual roll call the process through which Harris will officially become the Democratic nominee will begin on August 1 and end on August 5. Democratic delegates from across the nation made their voices heard, overwhelmingly ..

Democrats insists Biden to reconsider runup to their own party convention

Democrats worried about President Joe Biden's ability to win this November are making a renewed push for him to reconsider his reelection bid, using mountains of data, frank conversations and now, his own time off the campaign trail after testing positive for COVID, to encourage a reassessment. Biden has insisted he is not backing down, adamant that he is the candidate who beat Republican Donald Trump before and will do it again this year. But publicly and privately, key Democrats are sending signals of concern, and some hope he will assess the trajectory of the race and his legacy during this few days' pause. Over the past week, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries have spoken privately to the president, candidly laying out the views of Democrats on Capitol Hill, including their concerns. Separately, the chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, Rep. Suzan DelBene of Washington, spoke with the president last week armed wit

Indian Americans make their mark on 1st day of the Republican Convention

From taking the floor to announce all-out support for Donald Trump to reciting Ardaas, Indian Americans attending in large numbers have made their mark on the first day of the high-profile Republican National Convention being held here, days after the party's presumptive presidential candidate survived an assassination bid. Amidst tight security, the four-day event kicked off on Monday here in the US state of Wisconsin, just two days after a gunman opened fire at a Donald Trump rally in Pennsylvania, grazing his ear. Indian-American politician Abraham George, elected chairman of the Texas Republican Party in May, took to the floor to announce that all the delegates from his state were voting for Trump, the former president. Harmeet Dhillon, RNC National Committeewoman from California, recited Ardaas (an appeal to God) at the convention, which will officially nominate the 78-year-old former US president as the party's presidential candidate in the November 5 election. Trump enters Republican convention with bandage covering his right ear

Former President Donald Trump, two days after surviving an attempted assassination, appeared triumphantly at the Republican National Convention's opening night with a bandage over his right ear. Delegates cheered wildly as Trump appeared onscreen backstage and then emerged, visibly emotional, as Lee Greenwood sang God Bless the USA." Trump did not address the convention. Trump's appearance came hours after jubilant and emboldened delegates nominated the former president to lead their ticket for a third time and welcomed Ohio Sen. JD Vance as his running mate. We must unite as a party, and we must unite as a nation, said Republican Party Chairman Michael Whatley, Trump's handpicked party leader, as he opened Monday's primetime national convention session. We must show the same strength and resilience as President Trump and lead this nation to a greater future. But Whatley and other Republican leaders made clear that their calls for harmony did not extend to President Joe Biden and .

US Republican candidate Tim Scott drops out of 2024 GOP presidential race

Republican presidential candidate Tim Scott announced late Sunday that he was dropping out of the 2024 race, about two months before the start of voting in Iowa's leadoff caucuses. The South Carolina senator made the surprise announcement on Sunday Night in America with Trey Gowdy. The news was so abrupt that one campaign worker told The Associated Press that campaign staff found out Scott was dropping out by watching the show. The worker was not authorised to discuss the internal deliberations publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity. The news comes as Scott, 58, continued to struggle in the polls and just days after the third Republican primary debate. The only Black Republican senator, Scott entered the race in May with more cash than any other Republican candidate but couldn't find a lane in a field dominated by former President Donald Trump. I love America more today than I did on May 22, Scott said Sunday night. But when I go back to Iowa, it will not be as a presidential
