Russia makes more precision drones to attack Ukraine's vital rail network

When Russian drones smashed into the Shostka train station in northeastern Ukraine earlier this month, they killed a 71-year-old man, injured at least eight people and left train cars buckled by fire and riddled with shrapnel holes. It was one of the latest examples of what Ukrainian officials say has been a surge since mid-summer in attacks on railways, a critical artery for commercial and military logistics. They are part of Russia's broader targeting of infrastructure that now is being carried out with greater precision thanks to advances in long-range drone technology that include onboard video feed. In the attack in Shostka, less than 70 km from the Russian border, two explosives-laden drones struck two commuter trains in quick succession. Russia has stepped up railway attacks over the past three months, seeking to sow unrest in Ukrainian regions it borders by depriving people there of rail connections, Oleksandr Pertsovskyi, the CEO of the Ukrainian state railway, told The ..

Chinese airlines protest US plan to ban flights over Russian airspace

China's biggest state-owned air carriers have hit back at a US proposal to bar them from flying over Russia when travelling to or from the US. The US side has said such flights give Chinese airlines an unfair cost advantage over American carriers, which cannot cross through Russian airspace. Moscow closed Russian airspace to US air carriers and most European airlines in 2022 in response to Western sanctions for Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Air China, China Eastern and China Southern are among six Chinese airlines filing complaints over the order proposed last week to prohibit such flights by Chinese carriers. China Eastern said in its filing this week to the US Department of Transport that the proposed ban would harm the public interest" and "inconvenience travellers from both China and the US. The additional flight time would result in higher costs and elevated air fares, which increases the burden on all travellers, it said. China Southern warned that a Russian airspace ban woul

Russian air strike hits Ukrainian hospital days before Zelensky-Trump meet

Russian forces launched powerful glide bombs and drones against Ukraine's second-largest city in overnight attacks, hitting a hospital and wounding seven people, an official said Tuesday, as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy prepared to travel to Washington and ask US President Donald Trump for more American military help. The Russian attack on Kharkiv in Ukraine's northeast hit the city's main hospital, forcing the evacuation of 50 patients, regional head Oleh Syniehubov said. The attack's main targets were energy facilities, Zelenskyy said, without providing details of what was hit. Every day, every night, Russia strikes power plants, power lines, and our (natural) gas facilities, Zelenskyy said on Telegram. Russian long-range strikes on its neighbour's power grid are part of a campaign since Moscow launched a full-scale invasion in February 2022 to disable Ukraine's power supply, denying civilians heat and running water during the bitter winter. The Ukrainian leader urged

Trump warns Russia he may send Ukraine Tomahawks if war isn't settled soon

President Donald Trump on Sunday warned Russia that he may send Ukraine long-range Tomahawk missiles if Moscow doesn't settle its war there soon. "I might say, 'Look: if this war is not going to get settled, I'm going to send them Tomahawks," Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One as he flew to Israel. "The Tomahawk is an incredible weapon, very offensive weapon. And honestly, Russia does not need that." He added, "I might tell them that if the war is not settled -- that we may very well--we may not, but we may do it. I think it's appropriate to bring up." Trump's comments came after he spoke by phone earlier Sunday with Ukranian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Power restored to 800K in Kyiv after Russia hits Ukraine's energy grid

Power was restored to over 800,000 residents in Kyiv on Saturday a day after major attacks by Russia on the Ukrainian power grid caused blackouts across much of the country. Ukraine's largest private energy company, DTEK, said Saturday that the main work to restore the power supply had been completed, but that some localised outages were still affecting the Ukrainian capital following Friday's massive Russian attacks. Russian drone and missile strikes wounded at least 20 people in Kyiv, damaged residential buildings and caused blackouts across swaths of Ukraine early Friday. Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko described the attack as one of the largest concentrated strikes against Ukraine's energy infrastructure. Russia's Defence Ministry on Friday said the strikes had targeted energy facilities supplying Ukraine's military. It did not give details of those facilities, but said Russian forces used Kinzhal hypersonic missiles and strike drones against them. The energy sector has been a

Putin praises Trump's peace efforts even after failing to win Nobel Prize

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday praised US President Donald Trump's peace efforts, despite not winning a Nobel, and voiced hope for securing an agreement to extend a pivotal nuclear arms pact with Washington for another year. Asked by reporters whether he thinks Trump was unjustly passed over for the Nobel Peace Prize in favour of Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, Putin replied he wasn't the one to decide but extolled Trump's efforts toward a ceasefire in Gaza and in Ukraine. He's really doing a lot to resolve such complex crises that have lasted for years and even decades, Putin said of Trump while in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, for a summit of former Soviet nations. He added that if the Gaza ceasefire deal is carried out, it would mark a historic" achievement. The Russian leader didn't comment on Machado's win, but he said without mentioning any names that the Nobel Committee in the past has awarded the prize to those who have accomplished little to help glob

Russian airstrikes injure 9, cause damage, blackouts in Ukraine's capital

Russian airstrikes injured at least nine people, damaged residential buildings and caused blackouts across parts of the Ukrainian capital early Friday, authorities said. Rescue crews pulled more than 20 people out of a 17-storey apartment building as flames engulfed the sixth and seventh floors. Five people were hospitalised, while others received first aid at the scene, authorities said. The overnight assault marked the latest in a series of attacks on Kyiv. Russian forces have escalated drone and missile strikes on Ukrainian cities in recent months, often targeting energy infrastructure and civilian areas. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said Friday's attack knocked out power on both sides of the city divided by the Dnipro River and disrupted water supplies.
