Saudi Crown Prince hopes 'ceasefire' will restore calm between Pak, India

Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Wednesday welcomed the "ceasefire" agreement between Pakistan and India, expressing hope that it will restore calm between the two neighbours. Prince Mohammed made the remarks while delivering a speech during a meeting of leaders from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and US President Donald Trump in the Saudi capital Riyadh. "We welcome the ceasefire agreement between Pakistan and India," he was quoted as saying by the state-owned Saudi Press Agency. The powerful prince hoped that this would "contribute to containing the escalation and restoring calm between the two countries." India carried out precision strikes under 'Operation Sindoor' on terror infrastructure early on May 7 in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people. Following the Indian action, Pakistan attempted to attack Indian military bases on May 8, 9 and 10. The Indian armed forces launched a fierce counter-attack on several Pakistani ...

Golden swords, Arabian horses: Trump gets a royal welcome in Saudi Arabia

The fist bump seems so long ago. Three years after Joe Biden's cursory greeting with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Donald Trump luxuriated in an extravagant royal welcome as he arrived in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday. Concerns about human rights and fossil fuels in the oil-rich autocracy were nowhere on the agenda. Instead the day was all about cutting deals and celebrating a personal relationship that has endured through scandal and political turmoil. I really believe we like each other a lot, Trump said as they sat on golden chairs under elaborate chandeliers in the royal palace. During a speech later in the day, the president described Prince Mohammed as an incredible man" and my friend. The feeling was clearly mutual. The crown prince addressed his guest as my dear President Trump," and the Saudis played his campaign anthems God Bless the U.S.A. and YMCA during his appearance at an investment forum. For the U.S. Republican president, the visit was a return to the internation

Saudi crown prince welcomes Trump as he begins four-day Mideast tour

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman welcomed President Donald Trump to Saudi Arabia on Tuesday as the US leader began a four-day Middle East tour. Trump, as he did in his first term, is paying an early visit to the kingdom after the crown prince promised to pump hundreds of billions of dollars in new investments in the United States. The US administration said it intended to use the trip to launch economic agreements with the Saudis as well as the governments of Qatar and United Arab Emirates later this week. But behind closed doors, the leaders of all three countries are aiming to get a bead on US efforts to dismantle Iran's nuclear programme, end the war in Gaza, hold down oil prices and more.

Trump starts his Mideast trip with visit to Saudi amid crush of problems

President Donald Trump is opening his four-day Mideast trip on Tuesday by paying a visit to Saudi Arabia's de facto ruler, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, for talks on US efforts to dismantle Iran's nuclear programme, end the war in Gaza, hold down oil prices and more. The crown prince will fete Trump with a formal dinner and host a gathering of members of the Gulf Cooperation Council, which is made up of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Saudi Arabia and fellow OPEC+ nations have already helped their cause with Trump early in his second term by stepping up oil production. Trump sees cheap energy as a key component to lowering costs and stemming inflation for Americans. The president has also made the case that lower oil prices will hasten an end to Russia's war on Ukraine. But Saudi Arabia's economy remains heavily dependent on oil, and the kingdom needs a fiscal break-even oil price of $96 to $98 a barrel to balance its budget. It's ...

Aramco reports $26 bn profit in Q1, down 4.6% on lower oil prices

Saudi Arabia's state-owned oil giant Aramco posted first-quarter profits of $26 billion on Sunday, down 4.6% from the prior year. Aramco, formally known as the Saudi Arabian Oil Co, had revenues of $108.1 billion over the quarter, the company reported in a filing on Riyadh's Tadawul stock exchange. The company saw $107.2 billion in revenues and profits of $27.2 billion the same quarter last year. Aramco's stock traded over $6 a share Thursday, down from a high of around $8 last year. It has dropped over the past year as oil prices have dipped, and in recent months, as the OPEC+ oil cartel announced restoring production more rapidly and as uncertainty driven by US tariffs has rippled through Middle Eastern markets. Benchmark Brent crude traded Friday at over $63 a barrel, down from highs of over $80 in the last year.

Saudi seeks to de-escalate India-Pak tensions, end military confrontations

Saudi Arabia early Saturday said it was making efforts to de-escalate tensions between India and Pakistan, end current military confrontations, and promote the resolution of all disputes through dialogue and diplomatic channels. In a brief statement, the Foreign Ministry said that upon the directives of the Saudi leadership, Al-Jubeir visited India and Pakistan on May 8 and 9 as part of the Kingdom's "ongoing efforts to de-escalate tensions, end current military confrontations, and promote the resolution of all disputes through dialogue and diplomatic channels". The Saudi statement came as tensions soared significantly, with Pakistan claiming that its three airbases were targeted by Indian missiles and drones early Saturday. Pakistan military spokesperson Lt Gen Ahmad Sharif Chaudhry told a hurriedly called press conference in Islamabad at around 4 am that Nur Khan (Chaklala, Rawalpindi), Murid (Chakwal) and Rafiqui (Shorkot in Jhang district) airbases of Pakistan Air Force were ...

Trump plans to announce US will call Persian Gulf Arabian Gulf: Officials

President Donald Trump plans to announce while on his trip to Saudi Arabia next week that the US will now refer to the Persian Gulf as the Arabian Gulf or the Gulf of Arabia, two US officials told The Associated Press on Tuesday. Arab nations have pushed for a change to the geographic name of the body of water off the southern coast of Iran, while Iran has maintained its historic ties to the gulf. The US officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive matters. The White House and National Security Council didn't immediately respond to messages seeking comment. The Persian Gulf has been widely known by that name since the 16th century, although usage of Gulf of Arabia and Arabian Gulf is dominant in many countries in the Middle East. The government of Iran formerly Persia threatened to sue Google in 2012 over the company's decision not to label the body of water at all on its maps. On Google Maps in the US, the body of water appears as Persian Gulf (Arabian Gulf). .

US approves $3.5 bn missile sale to Saudi ahead of Trump's planned visit

The United States has given initial approval to sell $3.5 billion worth of air-to-air missiles for Saudi Arabia's fighter jets, the latest proposed arms deal for the region ahead of President Donald Trump's planned trip to the region later this month. The sale, announced early Saturday, likely will be one of several heralded by Trump on his visit to the kingdom. Saudi Arabia has already said it wants to invest $600 billion in the United States over the next four years, likely as a way to woo Trump to again pick the kingdom for his first formal trip as president. Trump travelled to Italy briefly for Pope Francis' funeral. Trump's 2017 trip to Saudi Arabia upended a tradition of modern US presidents typically first heading to Canada, Mexico or the United Kingdom for their first trip abroad. It also underscored his administration's close ties to the rulers of the oil-rich Gulf states as his eponymous real estate company has pursued deals across the region. The arms sale involves 1,000
