School enrollments drop in last 2 years: Union Minister in Lok Sabha

The country has reported a worrying drop in school enrollments in 2023-24, especially at the elementary level where numbers declined by around eight percentage points compared to 2021-22, according to government data presented in Parliament on Thursday. Replying to a question on the living standards of tribal people, Union Minister of State for Tribal Affairs Durgadas Uikey told Lok Sabha that the gross enrollment ratio of tribal students at the elementary level declined from 103.4 per cent in 2021-22 to 97.1 per cent in 2023-24. In comparison, the GER of students from all communities dropped sharply from 100.13 per cent in 2021-22 to 91.7 per cent in 2023-24. At the secondary level (classes 9-10), the GER of tribal students dropped from 78.1 per cent in 2021-22 to 76.9 per cent in 2023-24, the data showed. Nursery admissions in Delhi private schools end, first list on Jan 17

Nursery admissions for the 202526 academic session in around 1,741 private schools in Delhi concluded on Friday. The Delhi government's Directorate of Education (DoE), in a circular on November 12, announced that the last date to submit registration forms was December 20. The first general admission lists will be published on January 17, 2025. Pratika Gupta, principal of Sovereign School, Rohini, said, "This year, we received more than 2,000 registrations for nursery admissions, which is quite satisfactory and exceeds last year's numbers." Chairperson of Gitarattan Global School, R N Jindal, said the school received approximately 1,000 registrations for nursery admissions. KVS can't deny EWS admissions if certificate issued by another state: HC

The Centre, which controls the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS), is the appropriate government for notifying the annual income threshold to decide whether a child belongs to the economically weaker section (EWS), the Delhi High Court has ruled. It said the KVS cannot deny admission to a student under the EWS category on the ground that the income certificate has been obtained from another state and not from the Delhi government. Justice Anup Jairam Bhambhani said the central government has notified that a certificate for that purpose is to be issued by an officer not below the rank of tehsildar in the state, after carefully verifying all relevant documents and following due process as prescribed by the respective state governments. SC dismisses plea on banning screening of children for nursery admissions

The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed a plea challenging the Delhi High Court's decision refusing to direct the lieutenant governor to give assent to or return a 2015 bill which proposed a ban on screening children for nursery admissions. A bench of Justice SK Kaul and Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia said it cannot pass a direction to enact a law. "Can there be a mandamus to enact a law? Can we direct the government to introduce the bill? Admission against vacant seats of pre-primary and primary classes in government Sarvodaya Vidyalayas for the academic session 2023-2024 will be done on a first come-first serve basis from April 24, the Delhi government's Directorate of Education (DoE) said on Tuesday. According to a circular issued by DoE, seats of students placed under long absence during the current session and not traceable or admitted in another school (with documentary proof) will be considered vacant. Priority should be given to applicants who have applied for admission on a transfer basis from Sarvodaya Vidyalayas of DoE, it said. MCD takes primary school admissions online, discusses skills improvement

QR codes have been pasted on the gates of all the MCD's primary schools to enable parents to scan those and fill the admission form online, a move aimed at simplifying the process, officials said on Monday. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi's (MCD) Education department met at the Kedarnath Sahni Auditorium to discuss ways to improve the foundational literacy and numeracy (FLN) skills of primary-level students, the MCD said in a statement.
