J&K Policeman, who allegedly attempted suicide at DGP office, succumbs to injuries

A policeman, who had allegedly shot himself over some family issue at the official residence of the Director General of Police (DGP) here, succumbed to his injuries at a hospital Tuesday, police said. Head Constable Subash Chander was on duty at the official residence of the DGP at Bikram Chowk when, it is suspected, he attempted suicide by shooting himself with his service rifle at around 10:30 am Monday, they said. Chander was rushed to the government medical college hospital by his colleagues, but he succumbed to his injuries at 11:45 am Tuesday, the official said. A case has been registered under Section 309 (attempt to commit suicide) of the Ranbir Penal Code, police said. DGP Dilbagh Singh has not shifted to his official residence yet.

US may give troops authority to protect border personnel

United State President Donald Trump might grant new authority to US troops deployed on the Southwest border with Mexico to protect Customs and Border Protection personnel from migrants if they engage in violence, CNN quoted two defense officials and another US official directly familiar with the plans.According to CNN, an additional administration official informed that the authority will also grant protection of federal property.According to CNN, around 5,800 to 5,900 troops have been assigned for the border mission. However, at the moment the troops do not have the authority to intervene if CBP personnel came under attack. The officials informed that the move could be declared as soon as Monday evening.This comes after the Department of Homeland Security officials started to get information about groups of individuals planning to enter into legal ports of entry in California by attempting to pass through vehicle lanes, CNN reported.

Eight Indian-American women honoured in US

Eight Indian-American women have been honoured in the US in recognition of their achievements in diverse fields ranging from politics and business to civil rights activism and astrophysics. Immigration lawyer Sheela Murthy, vice chairwoman of the Asian American Hotel Owners Association (AAHOA) Jagruti Panwala and NASA astrophysicist Madhulika Guhathakurta were among the awardees. Online system inaugurated in AIIMS to provide data on cause of death

AIIMS Director Randeep Guleria inaugurated an online platform on Monday to provide data on the cause of deaths in the country which helps the government plan and monitor the effectiveness of its health programmes. The premier institute has developed the platform for the Registrar General of India Office, the Ministry of Home Affairs. The RGI office had signed an MoU with the AIIMS last year to provide technical support for its Sample Registration System-based verbal autopsy. The SRS (Sample Registration System) is the single most important source of data on annual demographic indicators including causes of death in any country. Under this system, close caregivers of the deceased identified under the SRS are interviewed and they fill up a a predesigned form used by trained physicians to arrive at the cause of death, a senior AIIMS official said. AIIMS RDA organises workshop to spread awareness on 'legal and psychological aspects' of #MeToo

The Resident Doctors' Association (RDA) at the AIIMS organised a workshop Monday to spread awareness on the "legal and psychological aspects" of the #MeToo movement and urged doctors to come forward with their stories of sexual harassment, if any. RDA president Harjit Bhatti said he had faced a backlash when he decided to organise the workshop as a section of resident doctors and his male friends said asked him why he was trying to promote a campaign which could be misused to spoil someone's career. US fails at UN to weaken measure on sexual harassment

The United States failed on Monday to water down a UN resolution on combatting sexual harassment and violence against women despite backing from Russia, China, India, several Muslim countries and the Vatican. President Donald Trump's administration sought to scrap language in the non-binding resolution on access to reproductive health care services, safe abortions and recognizing the right of women to decide on matters related to their sexuality. SC asks Centre to apprise NGO of steps taken to deal with farmers' plight

The Supreme Court Monday asked the Centre to provide to an NGO the information about the steps taken to ameliorate the plight of farmers to effectively deal with rural indebtedness and other problems which lead them to commit suicide. The apex court, on July 6, 2017, had granted six months to the Centre for showing positive results of its several welfare schemes like 'Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana' (PMFBY), crop loans and Kisan Credit Card (KCC) which were launched to deal with the difficulties faced by farmers across the country. A bench comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and justices S K Kaul and K M Joseph asked Attorney General K K Venugopal to hand over the copy of Centre's affidavit and other documents to senior advocate Colin Gonsalves, representing NGO Citizens Resource and Action Initiative (CRANTI), which has filed the PIL on farmers' suicides. French prosecutors probe PSG 'racial profiling' claims

French prosecutors have opened an investigation into claims Paris Saint-Germain subjected apprentices to racial profiling, breaking anti-discrimination laws. A Hindu woman lawmaker and human rights activist in Pakistan has made it to the list of BBC's 100 inspiring and influential women from around the world. Australia warns Indians against contrived marriage scams

The Australian government has cautioned Indian nationals who want to live permanently in Australia against organised contrived marriage scams targeting South Asians. The warning came after Australian Border Force (ABF) shut down a contrived marriages syndicate operating out of Sydney, with a 32-year-old Indian national facing court over his alleged role as the main facilitator. Four Australian citizens too are facing charges of convincing individuals to fraudulently marry non-citizens seeking to obtain permanent residency, the Australian High Commission here said in a release titled 'warning about fake marriage scams'. It said the long running operation by the ABF also resulted in 164 foreign nationals having their applications for a "partner visa" refused after they were linked to the syndicate. Devaswom Board moves SC seeking time to implement Sabarimala verdict
