Quake survivor Singh puts Nepal on Asian swim map

Having survived a killer earthquake and an embarrassing wardrobe glitch at the 2016 Rio Olympics, Nepali swimmer Gaurika Singh is not your typical 15-year-old. The bubbly schoolgirl made waves as the youngest athlete at the Olympics but is happy to shed that tag and reveals that she has come out of her shell since her baby-faced appearance in Brazil. "A lot of my friends say I'm really loud, which is fair enough because I am," Singh told AFP at the Asian Games on Monday. "I sometimes think in my head 'oh just shut up, Gaurika -- you're so annoying!' I'm a social person." Singh, who left Nepal as a toddler to move to London, got into a flap in Rio when she tore her swimsuit before her 100m backstroke heat before slipping on a new costume and winning the race. Fast forward two years and Singh is strolling around the Asian Games pool in Jakarta like a seasoned pro. She is a whopping six years older than Indonesian skateboarder Aliqqa Novvery, who at nine is the youngest athlete at the ...

Alcohol-free Games Village leave officials high and dry

The 'no alcohol' policy at the Asian Games Village has not gone down well with the coaches and officials travelling with the athletes. Some have even tried to smuggle alcohol into the Village but with little success. An alcohol-free zone is not a surprise considering Indonesia banned liquor sale from departmental stores in 2015, barring the tourist-heavy Bali province. Indonesia also has the largest Muslim population in the world. "Only yesterday I saw whiskey bottles lying with the security guards at the Games Village. They are very strict about it. Though athletes don't care much about the lack of alcohol, it is very normal to find a beer in the international zone of any major multi-sporting event including the Commonwealth Games this year," a coach of the Indian contingent told PTI. While alcohol is readily available in pubs and restaurants in co-host Jakarta, it is tough to find even a mild beer in the port city of Palembang, the capital of South Sumatra province. For those ...

Ronaldo's dramatic debut ends with goalkeeper in hospital

Cristiano Ronaldo's Serie A debut was marked not by a goal but by accidentally putting the opposing team's goalkeeper in hospital. With the score locked at 2-2 late on in Juventus' match at Chievo Verona, Ronaldo collided with Stefano Sorrentino in a chaotic penalty area. Sorrentino was knocked out cold briefly and there were an anxious few minutes as he received immediate treatment before being substituted. The 39-year-old goalkeeper was immediately taken to the hospital and released on Sunday morning with a fractured nose, bruising to his left shoulder and whiplash. Sorrentino was able to joke about the incident, posting a photo on Twitter with the caption: "Thanks for your messages of support, affection and esteem. We are a fantastic group and yesterday we almost achieved the feat: while CR7 got me in full!" He also later revealed on the social media site that Ronaldo had been in touch: "I received a message of support and wishing me a speedy recovery from Cristiano Ronaldo. Thanks

Four Japan athletes booted from Asian Games in prostitute scandal

Four Japanese basketball players have been sent home from the Asian Games in disgrace for allegedly paying prostitutes for sex, the Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC) said Monday. The players were spotted in a notorious red light district of Jakarta in their national jerseys last week, JOC officials told a press conference, saying the quartet had been ordered to leave immediately. News that Yuya Nagayoshi, Takuya Hashimoto, Takuma Sato, Keita Imamura had been booted out will come as a major embarrassment for Japan, who were forced to send a swimmer home from the last Asian Games in 2014 for stealing a journalist's camera. "I just feel a sense of shame," Japan's chef de mission Yasuhiro Yamashita told reporters. "We deeply apologise and intend to give the athletes thorough guidance from now on." The basketball players had dinner after leaving the Games village and are believed to have been solicited by touts on the street to go to a hotel with women, Yamashita added. "I would like to ...

Chinese Super League down to wire in 'fierce battle'

The Chinese Super League (CSL) is in the throes of the most closely contested title race in its history with just three points separating the top four as they approach the home straight. Beijing Guoan and Shanghai SIPG share the top spot on equal points with the two sides meeting at the end of September in what is shaping up to be a championship six-pointer. With a third of the season left, Shandong Luneng are a point behind and Fabio Cannavaro's reigning champions Guangzhou Evergrande three points off the summit in what Chinese media are terming "a fierce battle" to the finish in November. SIPG coach Vitor Pereira will feel that his side, boasting the expensive Brazilian duo Hulk and Oscar, are in slightly the better position because they have played a game less than Guoan and Luneng. And in Wu Lei, Pereira has the CSL top-scorer, the Chinese international plundering 18 goals in 18 matches this season. Wu was at it again on Saturday, scoring twice in a 3-2 away win at a Chongqing ...

Saina's defeat knocks India out of women's team event

An inconsistent Saina Nehwal saved four match points before losing to Nozomi Okuhara after PV Sindhu's gritty win over world number one Japanese Akane Yamaguchi, as India crashed out of the Asian Games women's badminton team event today. The Indian women's team, which won a historic bronze in the last edition in Incheon, lost the quarterfinal to the top-seeded and the most formidable team in the world. It was always going to be a close affair between Sindhu and Yamaguchi but the Indian prevailed in the tight opening singles 21-18 21-19. Sindhu, who took 41 minutes to put India ahead, had also beaten Yamaguchi at the recent World Championship on the way to the final. N Sikki Reddy and Arathi Sunil struggled to contain unforced errors and lost tamely 15-21 6-21 to Yuki Fukushima and Sayaka Hirota, allowing the Japanese to make it 1-1. In the crucial second women's singles, Saina made a dramatic comeback and saved four match points in the second game, but eventually lost 11-21 25-23 ...

'Spiritual' shooter Deepak Kumar finally lands a major medal

India's Deepak Kumar produced a late surge to steal a silver in the men's 10m rifle event at the Asian Games, giving the shooting contingent its second medal here. China's defending champion Yang Haoran was a cut above the rest, winning the gold with an aggregate of 249.1. Deepak, who was not in the race for a medal until the 18th shot when he produced a perfect 10.9, earned his maiden Asian Games medal with 247.7, pushing Taipei's Lu Shaochuan to third with 226.8 in the 24-shot final. Ravi Kumar, who had won a mixed team bronze alongside Apurvi Chandela yesterday, was unlucky to miss out on a medal. He was eliminated after the 20th shot, scoring 205.2. For the Delhi-based Deepak, it was his first major individual medal, after having won a World Cup in mixed team event alongside Mehuli Ghosh in Guadalajara earlier this year. A medal from a highly competitive field is a promising result but still there is a long way to go before the current crop can match the performances by Olympic ...
