In a letter addressed to honorary secretary of the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), MP Rahul Shewale said Wadekar had made the country as well as Mumbai proud as Indian captain. "Wadekar made Mumbaikars proud, as under his captaincy India recorded maiden wins in England and West Indies. He had been honoured with Padmashri as well as state government's Arjun award. A stand in Wankhede stadium should be named after him, to recognise his contribution," the Mumbai South Central MP stated. He said demise of Wadekar (77) is a major loss to the world of cricket.
