Suspended SLC hopeful of reinstatement after ICC CEO Allardice's visit

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) is hopeful that its international suspension will be revoked in March after ICC CEO Jeff Allardice recently held "constructive" discussions with the country's president Ranil Wickremesinghe and sports minister Harin Fernando. The ICC had suspended Sri Lanka in November last year citing political interference in its functioning, and subsequently the U-19 World Cup scheduled here was also shifted to South Africa. After his meeting with Allardice, Fernando posted on X (formerly Twitter) that he had a "constructive discussion and a way forward for SLC." Allardice will now submit his findings to the ICC board which is due to meet in March and the suspension of Sri Lanka is likely to be on the agenda among other things. In fact, this was the second time an ICC official visited the island nation to ascertain the level of political intrusion into cricket administration in the country. Imran Khwaja, the ICC Deputy Chair, had paid a visit to the country around June l

India to tour Sri Lanka in July-August, 2024 for 6-match white-ball series

The crisis-ridden Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) and its host broadcaster will have something to cheer about during the middle of 2024 when the Indian team makes it annual ritual tour of the islands for a short six-match white-ball series, the board announced on Wednesday. SLC has been banned by the ICC for government interference and the global body has also shifted the U-19 World Cup to South Africa. However the national teams (men and women) will be allowed to fulfil their bilateral commitments. According to the 2024 calender released by SLC, India is supposed to travel for three ODI and T20Is each during July-August, which is effectively country's cricket season. The men's national team is due to play 52 international games in 2024, which includes 10 Tests, 21 ODIs and 21 T20Is. The T20Is, however, doesn't factor in the additional games that they will play during the T20 World Cup. One of the major assignment will be the three-Test away series in England, which is a part of the curren

ICC ban a betrayal of the nation: Sri Lanka sports minister Ranasinghe

Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe on Sunday slammed Sri Lanka Cricket for bidding for a ban from the ICC, calling it a "big betrayal of the country". Ranasinghe had appointed an interim committee after sacking the governing body headed by Shammi Silva following the national team's disastrous World Cup campaign. "This is big betrayal of the country," said Ranasinghe after reading out correspondence with the ICC by Silva administration. "They were doing so to selfishly hang on to positions after audit reports had highlighted their corrupt action." Ranasinghe had appointed legendary captain Arjuna Ranatunga as the head of the seven-member interim committee. But the ICC then suspended SLC with immediate effect for government interference and Silva also managed to obtain a court order suspending the interim committee. In response to a parliamentary speech by the main opposition leader Sajith Premadasa accusing SLC of promoting the ICC for a ban, SLC said Ranasinghe was politically ...

World Cup 2023: Mendis hopes ICC suspension won't affect cricket in Lanka

A concerned Sri Lanka skipper Kusal Mendis on Sunday hoped the ICC's suspension of the nation's cricket body will not affect the upcoming fixtures of the national team and the preparations for the men's U19 World Cup here early next year. Sri Lanka have a busy schedule next year, starting with Zimbabwe touring the island nation in January-February for a limited-overs series. The 2024 men's U19 World Cup will commence in the island nation on January 13 with 16 teams competing. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has been in turmoil ever since the Mendis-led team exited the World Cup, losing seven of the nine matches they played in India. "We hope the suspension will end soon, enabling us to practice for our schedule ahead. It will be good for the hosting of the Under-19 World Cup too," Mendis told the media on arrival from India. The International Cricket Council (ICC) had on Friday suspended Sri Lanka, a full-member, after observing government interference in the national board. The Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka sports minister says ICC suspension of cricket board illegal

Sri Lanka's sports minister said Saturday the International Cricket Council's suspension of the nation's cricket board over political interference was illegal and that he will seek to reverse it. Minister Roshan Ranasinghe told reporters that if he can't resolve the issue through the ICC's conflict resolution arm, he will go to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland. Ranasinghe said the ICC's suspension was against its own rules and that the organization should have first sought the approval of the other members. The ICC suspended Sri Lanka Cricket on Friday citing political interference in its administration. Earlier this week, the ministry of sport sacked the national board over the team's poor performance at the World Cup in India. The ministry also accused the board of corruption. A court decision reversed the ministry's verdict, but it was still grounds for the ICC to take action. Sri Lanka is ninth in the World Cup standings. It still needs the remaining games to

ICC suspends Sri Lanka Cricket with immediate effect for govt interference

The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Friday suspended Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) due to government interference. The Sri Lanka government had sacked the SLC following the team's disastrous show at the World Cup, where it lost seven of the nine games. SLC was reinstated by the court of appeal, thus further deepening the crisis in the country's cricket governing body. On Thursday, a joint government and opposition resolution in parliament demanded the resignation of the SLC's management. "International Cricket Council Board has suspended Sri Lanka Cricket's membership of the ICC with immediate effect," ICC said in a statement. "The ICC Board met today and determined that Sri Lanka Cricket is in serious breach of its obligations as a Member, in particular, the requirement to manage its affairs autonomously and ensure that there is no government interference in the governance, regulation and/or administration of cricket in Sri Lanka," the statement said. "The conditions of the ...

Sri Lanka parliament passes resolution to sack cricket board's management

In another twist, the Sri Lankan parliament on Thursday unanimously passed a resolution, calling for the sacking of the country's cricket governing body, with both the ruling and opposition parties supporting it. The main opposition party leader Sajith Premadasa moved the resolution titled 'the removal of the corrupt SLC (Sri Lanka Cricket) management' which was seconded by the senior government minister Nimal Siripala de Silva. The parliament's approval came two days after the Court of Appeal restored the SLC management headed by Shammi Silva on Tuesday. On Monday, Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe sacked the SLC management and appointed former World Cup-winning captain Arjuna Ranatunga as head of a seven-member interim committee to govern the cricket board. There was cross party support for the resolution asking the removal of Silva-led SLC management, which, however, is not legally binding. Premadasa said the aim was to make the public aware of the misdeeds in the SLC ...

World Cup 2023: Assistant coach feels Sri Lanka have gaps in skills to fill

Having made an early exit from the World Cup, Sri Lanka's assistant coach Naveed Nawaz admitted on Wednesday that the team has a lot of gaps to fill before emerging as a serious contender in global tournaments. Sri Lanka will face New Zealand in their final league match here on Thursday, and Nawaz said they were looking for improvement in all areas of the game. We had to qualify for this World Cup. We were not in the top eight teams. We have gaps in skills to fill, and it's a massive subject, said Nawaz during his pre-match press meet. We need to be patient because the (current) group of players are not going to change other than the players who are coming through from the grassroots. So, we need to see how we can upskill our players and get them at par with international standards, said Nawaz. Taking that point forward, Nawaz said the Lankan batters need to find more consistency to gain desired results. The opening which was always concerning for us over a period of time. We've s
