Set up wellness teams, identify students at risk of self-harm: MoE

Setting up wellness teams, identifying students exhibiting warning signs and those at risk of self-harm and supporting them are among the draft guidelines prepared by the Union Ministry of Education for schools to prevent student suicides. With "Every Child Matters" as the underlying belief in developing the guidelines, the draft details directions to schools for enhancing sensitivity and understanding and providing support in case of reported self-harm. In addition, the guidelines also emphasise nurturing partnerships between schools, parents and the community, fostering societal support as a critical strategy for preventing suicides and reducing the stigma associated with suicidal behaviour. Discarding damaging notions, including comparisons with peers, the perception of failure as permanent and the sole measurement of success based on academic performance, have also been recommended in the draft, besides locking empty classrooms, lighting up dark corridors and cleaning gardens an

NIT Silchar student dies by suicide, 40 students injured in lathi charge

A third-year student of NIT-Silchar allegedly died by suicide on the campus, following which his classmates began a protest that eventually turned violent, prompting the police to lathi charge, in which 40 people were injured, officials said on Saturday. The body of the student, a native of Arunachal Pradesh, was found hanging in his hostel room on Friday evening. Alleging that he was forced to die by suicide because of the actions of the college authority, his classmates stopped the police from taking down the body. Two hours later, as the police managed to send the body for post-mortem examination, the students began a demonstration in front of dean of academics BK Roy's official residence on the campus. Parents tell children there's no going back: Police on suicides in Kota

One of the major reasons behind poor mental health of students in this coaching hub that often prompts them to take the extreme step is "parents telling them there is no going back", according to police and district officials attempting preventive measures as record student suicides rock "Kota factory". Top coaching institutes also claim that majority parents refuse to accept feedback provided to them and want their children to continue anyway in their preparation for engineering and medical entrance exams. From reaching out to parents about possible signs of depression in their child, no aptitude for the particular subject or career, inability to live away from home, police and coaching institutes say their communications to parents about such issues are often met with resistance and majority of them refuse to accept these. "Amid our interactions with the students, we found a student who was visibly depressed. I decided to call his father. His response was 'ye to auron ko depress k

Bad air quality linked to rise in suicide risk in rural populations: Study

Air pollution driven by wildfires have been linked with a heightened risk of committing suicide in rural populations, according to new research in the US. Every 10 per cent increase in particulate matter, or PM2.5, pollution in the rural counties was linked to a rise of 1.5 per cent in monthly suicide rates, the study from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Illinois, US, found. There is now evidence linking air pollution, long known for its bad effects on physical health, with mental health problems such as anxiety, depression and suicide, according to David Molitor, a professor of finance at the university and co-author of the study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). For the study, the researchers used data on deaths by suicide and satellite-based measurements of wildfire smoke and PM2.5 concentrations in the US from 2007-19. They then compared year-on-year monthly levels of smoke exposure at the county-level to changes in .

Kota hostels to have device on ceiling fans to stop student suicides

Worried by a spate of suicides by hanging, the authorities in this coaching hub have taken a desperate measure ordering hostels to install a spring device on ceiling fans to stop students from taking their lives. Twenty students preparing for competitive exams in Kota have died by suicide so far this year, authorities say. Last year, the figure was 15. The anti-suicide measure was discussed on August 12 at a meeting between Kota officials and other stakeholders. On Wednesday, Deputy Commissioner O P Bunkar issued the directions, demanding strict compliance. Action will be taken against hostel owners and their managements if the directions on fans are not followed, the administration said. This is how the device works: If an object weighing more than 20 kilos is hung from the fan, the spring attached to it expands, making it impossible for someone to commit suicide by this method. Simultaneously, a siren goes off. Back in 2017, the Kota Hostels Association had discussed the ...
