The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed the Karnataka government's plea against a high court order quashing the criminal case against BJP MP Tejasvi Surya. What is this? Don't politicise the matter. Surya was alleged to have disseminated fake news on a farmer's suicide in state's Haveri district. The bench dismissed the appeal of the state government and cautioned its against politicisation of legal proceedings. The case stemmed from a post shared by Surya on November 7, 2024, in which he cited a report from Kannada news portals claiming that a farmer, Rudrappa Channappa Balikai, had died by suicide after discovering that his land had been taken over by the Waqf Board. The post was subsequently deleted after it emerged that the claim was unfounded.
The Uddhav Thackeray-led faction on Wednesday moved the Supreme Court for an urgent hearing on its plea over the contentious Shiv Sena symbol in wake of the upcoming local body elections in Maharashtra. The matter was mentioned before a bench of Justices M M Sundresh and K Vinod Chandran which agreed to list it on July 14. The counsel for the Shiv Sena (UBT) informed the bench that local body polls were likely to be notified soon in the state. The counsel appearing for the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena faction said a similar request was made on May 7 before a bench headed by Justice Surya Kant, also hearing the symbol row matter, and it was rejected. The Shiv Sena (UBT) counsel argued that Justice Kant-led bench had said the matter could be mentioned during the top court's partial court working days. Plastic products maker Supreme Industries Ltd on Friday reported an increase of 22 per cent in its consolidated net profit to Rs 256.17 crore in the third quarter ended December 2023. The company had posted a net profit of Rs 210.03 crore in the October-December period a year ago, according to a regulatory filing. Its total revenue from operations was up 6 per cent to Rs 2,449.10 crore in the October-December quarter. It was at Rs 2,310.71 crore in the corresponding period of previous fiscal. Total expenses of Supreme Industries were at Rs 2,152.66 crore, up 3.82 per cent in the December quarter. Supreme Industries' total income, which includes other income, was at Rs 2,469.81 crore, up 6.5 per cent in third quarter of current fiscal. Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd (TPREL) on Friday said it has signed an agreement with Supreme Petrochem Ltd for setting up a 12.5 MW captive solar plant in Maharashtra. It has already signed a Power Delivery Agreement (PDA) with Supreme Petrochem Ltd through a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) TP Saturn Ltd in this regard, TPREL said in a statement. The plant will be set up at Achegaon in Maharashtra and will generate 27.5 million units of electricity every year. The plant is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 20,075 metric tonnes per annum and is expected to be operational within eight months of the signing of the PDA. "Our alliance with Supreme Petrochem Ltd to install 12.5 MW captive solar project will help them meet their sustainable energy requirements. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has urged the Supreme Court to urgently take up its curative petition against the top court's 2021 order dismissing its plea that had sought a review of a verdict that upheld a 2017 arbitration award in favour of the Delhi Airport Metro Express Private Limited (DAMEPL), a Reliance Infrastructure subsidiary, enforceable against it. Attorney General R Venkataramani told a bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud on Friday that the DMRC's curative petition was pending before the apex court since August last year. He told the court that the matter needs to be considered urgently and referred to a March 17 verdict of the Delhi High Court that directed the Centre and the city government to attend to the DMRC's request for extension of sovereign guarantees or subordinate debt to enable it to make payment of the dues of an arbitral award passed in favour of the DAMEPL.
