Magnitude 6 earthquake in Taiwan leaves 15 people with minor injuries

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6 struck southern Taiwan early Tuesday, according to the US Geological Survey, leaving 15 people with minor injuries. The quake hit at 12:17 am local time (1600 GMT Monday), with its epicentre 12 kilometres north of Yujing at a preliminary depth of 10 kilometres, USGS said. Taiwan's Central Weather Administration recorded a magnitude of 6.4. There were no immediate reports of deaths from the quake, though rescuers were still assessing damage. Taiwan's fire department said 15 people were sent to hospital for minor injuries. Among them were six people, including one child, who were rescued from a collapsed house in Nanxi District, Tainan city. The Zhuwei bridge on a provincial highway was reported to be damaged. Last April, a magnitude 7.4 quake hit the island's mountainous eastern coast of Hualien, killing at least 13 people and injuring more than 1,000 others. Taiwan takes another step in production of AI chips with advanced new plant

Taiwan took another step in enhancing its key role in the production of advanced semiconductor chips used for artificial intelligence on Thursday with the inauguration of a new plant by Siliconware Precision Industries Co. The opening ceremony for the Tan-Ke factory in the central city of Taichung was attended by Jensen Huang, CEO and co-founder of California-based Nvidia Corp, a world leader in the design of AI chips, reinforcing the companies' partnership in the production of advanced AI chips. SPIL is a leader in semiconductor packaging and testing. The technology that we're working on is becoming more sophisticated. Chips are getting more and more complex, and the packaging technology will need to evolve as well. What's even more exciting is the integration of silicon photonics, enabling us to connect multiple packages into one massive system, Huang said. He said Nvidia's partnership with SPIL would be instrumental in pushing the boundaries of innovation in coming years. Huang

China working with gangs, shell firms to gain intel: Taiwan spy agency

Taiwan's intelligence bureau says China's main spy agency is working with criminal gangs, shell companies and other dubious partners to gain intelligence on Taiwan's defences, resulting in a major rise in those arrested for alleged espionage on the island. Current and retired Taiwanese military personnel are a special concern, accounting for around half of the 64 alleged spies put on trial last year, it said. That number is up from 16 in 2021 and 10 in 2022. The arrests are in line with China's stepped-up campaign of military intimidation, economic coercion and gray area tactics such as utilizing the internet to promote unification and providing all-expense-paid trips to China to low-level government officials. According to a report released over the weekend by Taiwan's National Security Bureau, Chinese agents have sought to use the Taiwanese underworld to channel funds to those with information to sell. Gangs, many with origins dating to before the 1949 split between the two sides,
