Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Monday announced a 'domicile policy' in the recruitment of government teachers. The CM, however, did not specify what percentage of recruitments was to be reserved for those born and raised in the state. The announcement came ahead of the assembly elections in the state, which are due this year. "Since the formation of the government in November 2005, we have been continuously working to improve the education system. A large number of teachers have been appointed to strengthen the education system," he said. This will be implemented from the Teachers Recruitment Exam (TRE)-4, which will be conducted this year, while TRE-5 will be held in 2026, the chief minister said. Over 5 lakh candidates have so far applied for 35,726 assistant teacher posts in state-run and state-aided schools in West Bengal, a senior official said on Thursday. An online application portal was launched on June 16 to facilitate the process, with the original July 14 deadline getting extended to July 21. The number of applicants is 5 lakh-plus already. We are expecting the figure to go up," Chairman of the West Bengal School Service Commission Siddhartha Majumdar told PTI. On May 30, the WBSSC had issued a notification for recruitment of 35,726 assistant teachers in Classes 9-12 in state-aided and state-run schools, in adherence to a Supreme Court directive. The top court had asked the state government to file a compliance affidavit on the initiation of the recruitment process on or before May 31. In April, the Supreme Court had scrapped the entire 2016 State Level Selection Test (SLST) recruitment panel, and annulled 25,753 appointments of teachers of Classes 9-12 as well as

TMC slams Oppn after HC stays relief scheme for sacked non-teaching staff

The TMC on Friday reiterated its respect for the judiciary but strongly criticised opposition parties for allegedly "denying humanitarian relief" to thousands of non-teaching staff who lost their jobs after the Supreme Court quashed the 2016 recruitment process, calling the move by the opposition parties inhumane. The remarks came immediately after the Calcutta High Court restrained the West Bengal government from implementing a scheme that sought to provide monetary support to sacked Group C and D staff until September 26 or until further orders, whichever is earlier. Justice Amrita Sinha passed the interim order on petitions challenging the state's proposal to pay Rs 25,000 to each affected Group C employee and Rs 20,000 to each Group D staff member. The court had reserved its verdict on June 9. The state government has been asked to file its affidavit in opposition within four weeks, and the petitioners have been given a further two weeks to respond. Responding to the court's .

Nearly 50 protesting jobless teachers detained on way to Bengal secretariat

Nearly 50 jobless teachers protesting under the banner of the Deserving Teachers Rights Forum were detained at two locations here on their way to the West Bengal state secretariat, Nabanna. The group had assembled to demand permanent reinstatement as eligible teachers, opposing the state's directive to retake recruitment exams. As hundreds of protesters gathered at Sealdah Station and Esplanade around 2 km apart to begin their march, they were stopped by police personnel already deployed at the sites. "We were not allowed to hold a democratic march in a peaceful manner. All we wanted to do was to seek an appointment with CM Mamata Banerjee and let her know our situation and demand," said a forum member. In a symbolic act of protest, some demonstrators removed their shirts. Deputy Commissioner (Central) Indira Mukherjee said around 50 protesters were detained for attempting to obstruct traffic and disrupt public order. Shalarth 'scam': Over 500 teachers recruited fraudulently, says SIT

The special investigation team (SIT) probing the alleged 'Shalarth ID' scam in Maharashtra has found that more than 500 teachers were recruited without following laid down procedures, a senior official said on Sunday. Shalarth is a centralised portal of the Maharashtra government to manage payroll and service records of employees at government and government-aided schools, including teachers. Shalarth ID refers to the teacher identification number allotted to such staffers. "The SIT has found that of the 622 teachers appointed, only 75 had been hired following proper procedures. The remaining 547 were appointed using fake IDs after paying Rs 20-30 lakh each. This means the scam may be worth more than Rs 100 crore," the police official said. SIT in charge and assistant commissioner of police Sunita Meshram said the probe, apart from deputy directors in the education department, is now focusing on education officers and teachers. More arrests are likely in this case, Meshram added.

Teacher exam aspirants protest near Bihar CM's home, police disperse crowd

Chaos erupted near the official residence of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar in Patna on Tuesday when police baton-charged aspirants who had staged a sit-in demanding the release of supplementary results of a teacher recruitment exam. Bengal teachers who lost jobs to continue protesting outside SSC office

Over 2,000 teachers who lost their jobs as the result of a Supreme Court order continued their protest outside the office of the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) in Salt Lake overnight, demanding that it has to publish the list of candidates who were recruited on the basis of merit and those who got appointment by paying bribes. These teachers were among nearly 26,000 teaching and non-teaching staff whose appointments were cancelled by the Supreme Court on April 3 due to "widespread irregularities" in the recruitment process, which was held in 2016. "The WBSSC must be taught a lesson. We have stayed here under the open sky since last evening and will continue to be here until our demands are met," said one of the protesters. Following a meeting with some of the teachers who lost their jobs, state Education Minister Bratya Basu had said that the list of "deserving and undeserving" candidates would be published in two weeks. Calcutta HC to hear primary teachers' termination appeals on April 28

The Calcutta High Court will on April 28 take up for hearing appeals challenging the termination of around 32,000 jobs of primary teachers. The matter was mentioned on Monday before a division bench, comprising justices Tapabrata Chakraborty and Partha Sarathi Chatterjee, before which the appeals were assigned by Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam after another bench released the matter. The division bench said that the appeals by the West Bengal Board of Primary Education and others, including some of those who were recruited, challenging the termination of jobs of primary teachers by a single bench, will appear before it on April 28 for hearing. Releasing the matter from its court on April 7, a division bench comprising justices Soumen Sen and Smita Das De directed that the appeals be placed before Chief Justice Sivagnanam for assignment to a different bench. The division bench cited "personal reason" of Justice Sen for releasing the matter from its list for hearing. A single bench of

WB education min's 'empty promises' mean nothing, say protesting teachers

Three teachers, who have been staging a hunger strike for the last three days demanding that the West Bengal SSC release a list of eligible candidates of the 2016 recruitment examination, on Saturday said "hollow promises" made by Education Minister Bratya Basu meant nothing to them. Basu had on Friday said the School Service Commission (SSC) was ready to publish the digital mirror image of Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) sheets of all 22 lakh candidates who had appeared in the 2016 exam, after a Supreme Court judgment invalidated the appointment of 26,000 teachers and non-teaching staffers of schools in the state, terming the entire selection process "vitiated and tainted". The agitating teachers -- Pankaj Roy, Suman Biswas, and Pratap Kumar Saha -- began their indefinite fast before the SSC office at Acharya Bhavan here at 11 am on April 10 calling for immediate demarcation between tainted and untainted candidates whose jobs were invalidated by the apex court on April 3.
