Facebook checked alleged Russian meddling as early as 2014

Facebook acknowledged on Tuesday that its engineers had flagged potentially malicious Russian activity as early as 2014 -- long before it became public -- but did not confirm evidence of a coordinated campaign. The revelation came as the British parliament held hearings featuring lawmakers from nine countries into how the social media behemoth was being used to manipulate major election results. Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg refused to attend the meeting and organisers pulled up an empty chair in front of a spot featuring his nameplate at the shoehorn-shaped table in the House of Commons committee room in London. Zuckerberg's company is reeling from a series of crises linked to its handling of alleged Russian meddling in both the 2016 US presidential election and that year's British referendum on leaving the EU. Committee chief Damian Collins said he reviewed internal Facebook emails showing the company's engineers telling management in October 2014 that Russian IP ...

Geological Survey of India to use NASA-developed tech to locate minerals

The Geological Survey of India (GSI) is going to use ultra-modern remote-sensing technology developed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for the first time in India to map surface mineralogy, an official said Tuesday. The Airborne Visible-Infrared Imaging Spectrometer - Next Generation (AVIRIS-NG) will be used to locate minerals like lead, zinc, copper, platinum, diamond, gold and other associated minerals. This sensor is an engineering marvel and has been proved effective for mapping surface mineralogy in different parts of the world, Brij Kumar, additional director general of GSI (western zone), said at press conference. Recently, Kumar said, AVIRIS-NG sensor was mounted on board an ISRO aircraft for acquiring the hyperspectral images for 14 mineralised blocks in different parts of the country. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between GSI and National Remote Sensing Centre - Indian Space Research Organization (NRSC-ISRO) in Kolkata in ...

Seqrite blocks 35,000 RDP cyber attacks targeting Indian Enterprises

Cyber security firm Quick Heal Technologies said Tuesday its enterprise arm Seqrite detected and blocked more than 35,000 remote desktop protocol attacks per day on Indian enterprises in the last three months. "The enterprise arm (Seqrite) of Quick Heal Technologies has successfully blocked more than 35,000 RDP-based attacks per day on an average in the last three months," the company said in a statement. Quick Heal Technologies joint managing director and chief technology officer Sanjay Katkar said that RDP-based brute force attacks were common attack vectors a couple of years ago and were used to propagate the spread of ransomware. "Their newfound popularity is an alarming trend which should be paid close attention to. What makes these attacks even more dangerous is the fact that they shut down all layers of security on the infected system, leaving them completely vulnerable to future attacks," Katkar said. Security researchers at Seqrite have highlighted the easy availability of ...

Operational variance among smartphones in India higher than global levels: Study

Operational performance variances among smartphones in India surpass global benchmarks, a new study said Tuesday warning that such trends not only impact customer experience but may potentially cause USD 30 billion loss to Internet economy by 2020. Broadband India Forum (BIF) along with telecom audit and analytics company Phimetrics released a study that tested the operational variances in smartphones across the premium, mid-range and low-priced categories across multiple markets including India. "Global operational variance bands in smartphones are +/- 10 per cent. India operational variance bands are in the region of +/- 27% thereby impacting customer experience significantly," the study said. It outlined the results based on tests conducted across smartphones under similar network conditions and found variance ranges across models in India. Most consumers are completely unaware of the fact that device and network performances are inter-linked and not all devices will deliver at the

NASA's Insight spacecraft successfully lands on Mars after six-month journey

NASA's robotic InSight lander -- designed to dig deep into the rocky surface of Mars to reveal its secrets -- has successfully touched down on the Red Planet after a supersonic plunge through its rose-hued atmosphere, the US space agency said Tuesday. The lander sent signals indicating that its solar panels are open and collecting sunlight on the Martian surface, InSight mission team said in a statement. "Aaah...soaking up the Sun with my solar panels. After a long flight, and thrilling #MarsLanding, it feels great to get a good stretch and recharge my batteries," the InSight Twitter handle posted. NASA's Mars Odyssey orbiter relayed the signals of the landing, which were received on Earth at about 5:30 pm PST (7 am IST, Tuesday). Solar array deployment ensures the spacecraft can recharge its batteries each day. Odyssey also relayed a pair of images showing InSight's landing site. The Insight lander touched down near Mars' equator on the western side of a flat, smooth expanse of lava .

New method uses sunlight to purify water

Scientists have developed a simple process that can remove persistent pollutants in water using mere sunlight under the most basic conditions. The researchers from Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) in Germany rely on electrons moving freely in water, called hydrated electrons, to degrade dissolved pollutants. "These electrons are extremely reactive and can be used for a plethora of reactions. They break down even the most recalcitrant pollutants," said Martin Goez, a professor at MLU. For this to work, however, the electrons have to be released from the molecular compounds in which they are usually tightly bound. Until now, generating those electrons has required complex and expensive high-power lasers. Researchers introduced a new approach which only required a green light-emitting diode as the sole energy source. Vitamin C and traces of a metal complex as the catalyst were used to bring about the desired reaction. However, the catalyst had to be enclosed in tiny ...
