'Motion sculptures' 3D-printed from videos

MIT scientists have developed a way to 3D print "motion sculptures" from two dimensional videos that can help professional athletes and dancers to better visualise human body movements. The system uses an algorithm that can take 2D videos and turn them into that show how a human body moves through space. In addition to being an intriguing aesthetic visualisation of shape and time, the team envisions that their "MoSculp" system could enable a much more detailed study of motion for professional athletes, dancers, or anyone who wants to improve their physical skills. "Imagine you have a video of Roger Federer serving a ball in a tennis match, and a video of yourself learning tennis," said PhD student Xiuming Zhang at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US. "You could then build motion sculptures of both scenarios to compare them and more comprehensively study where you need to improve," said Zhang. Since motion sculptures are 3D, users can use a computer interface to ...

EU tells Facebook 'patience at limit' on consumer rules

The EU warned social network Facebook on Thursday to bring "misleading" consumer terms in line with the bloc's rules by the end of the year or risk financial penalties. "My patience has reached its limit," EU Justice and Consumer Affairs Commissioner Vera Jourova said in a statement. "It is now time for action and no more promises." Jourova said she would call on consumer protection authorities across the 28-country bloc, which requested the changes last year, to act swiftly and sanction the company if Facebook failed to comply. "While Facebook assured me to finally adapt any remaining misleading terms of services by December, this has been ongoing for too long," she said. The commission said that proposals made by the Mark Zuckerberg-led company were "very limited", even after the company changed its conditions in April. These new terms of services "contain a misleading presentation of the main characteristics of Facebook's services", the Commission said. The commission meanwhile ...

Robotic skins could bring your stuffed toys to life

Scientists have developed an electronic skin that can turn everyday objects -- from a stuffed animal to balls of crumpled paper -- into robots. The robotic skins, developed by researchers at Yale University in the US, enable users to design their own robotic systems. The skins are made from elastic sheets embedded with sensors and actuators. Placed on a deformable object the skins animate these objects from their surfaces, according to a study published in the journal Science Robotics. The makeshift robots can perform different tasks depending on the properties of the soft objects and how the skins are applied. "We can take the skins and wrap them around one object to perform a task -- locomotion, for example -- and then take them off and put them on a different object to perform a different task, such as grasping and moving an object," said Rebecca Kramer-Bottiglio, an assistant professor at Yale. "We can then take those same skins off that object and put them on a shirt to make an .
