3D-printed, driverless boats developed

MIT scientists have designed a fleet of 3D-printed, driverless boats that could ferry goods and people, helping clear up road congestion in waterway-rich cities such as Amsterdam, Bangkok and Venice - where canals run alongside and under bustling streets and bridges. The autonomous boats offer high maneuverability and precise control. They can be built using low-cost printer, making mass manufacturing more feasible. In the future, the researchers also envision the driverless boats being adapted to perform city services overnight, instead of during busy daylight hours, further reducing congestion on both roads and canals. "Imagine shifting some of infrastructure services that usually take place during the day on the road - deliveries, garbage management, waste management - to the middle of the night, on the water, using a fleet of autonomous boats," said Daniela Rus, from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US. The boats - rectangular 4-by-2-metre hulls equipped with ...

Eye movement can help gauge English proficiency

MIT scientists have uncovered a new way of telling how well people are learning English: tracking their eyes. Researchers used data generated by cameras trained on readers' eyes. They found that patterns of eye movement - particularly how long people's eyes rest on certain words - correlate strongly with performance on standardised tests of English as a second language. "To a large extent (eye movement) captures linguistic proficiency, as we can measure it against benchmarks of standardised tests," said Yevgeni Berzak, a postdoc at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US. "The signal of eye movement during reading is very rich and very informative," said Berzak. The researchers suggest the new method has potential use as a testing tool. "It has real potential applications," said Roger Levy, an associate professor at MIT. The researchers used a dataset of eye movement records from work conducted by Berzak. The dataset has 145 students of English as a second language, ...

'Electric vehicles could save billions on energy storage'

Using electric vehicles (EVs) as mobile power storage could eliminate the need to build costly stationary grid storage for energy from renewable sources, a study has found. Using California as a case study, researchers from the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) in the US looked at the issue of large-scale deployment of renewables across the energy grid. They analysed the associated problems of variability (daytime overproduction, or evening surge demand), and how controlled charging of mandated EVs could help to mitigate these problems. "By removing the need to build new stationary grid storage, EVs can provide a dual benefit of decarbonising transportation while lowering the capital costs for widespread renewables integration," said Jeffery Greenblatt, co-author of the study published in the journal Environmental Research Letters. "These benefits are not limited to California, but are applicable worldwide whenever EVs and renewables generation become widespread," ..

New tech may lead to easier-to-use prosthetic hands

Scientists have developed a new technology to make prosthetic wrists and hands easier for patients to use. The technology developed by researchers from North Carolina State University in the US relies on computer models that closely mimic the behaviour of the natural structures in the forearm, wrist and hand. It could also be used to develop new computer interface devices for applications such as gaming and computer-aided design (CAD). Current state-of-the-art prosthetics rely on machine learning to create a "pattern recognition" approach to prosthesis control. This approach requires users to "teach" the device to recognise specific patterns of muscle activity and translate them into commands - such as opening or closing a prosthetic hand. "Pattern recognition control requires patients to go through a lengthy process of training their prosthesis," says He Huang, a professor at North Carolina State University. "We wanted to focus on what we already know about the human body," said ...
