Keeping internet open right way forward for India: TRAI

Telecom regulator TRAI today strongly defended its stance on net neutrality, asserting that keeping the internet open and free is the "right way" forward for India. The comments come in the backdrop of US regulator yesterday rolling back net neutrality regulations adopted by the Obama administration. The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) passed the order by a three-to-two vote, scrapping the rules that were targeted at treating all internet services equally. According to reports, it felt that rolling back the net neutrality rules would restore the internet to light touch regulation. TRAI, on the other hand, has proposed restricting service providers from entering into agreements which lead to discriminatory treatment of content on the internet. TRAI, late last month, gave its recommendations to the Telecom Department, which will take the final call. "We will certainly stick to our stance. Every country is a sovereign country and every country is free to determine

Ford to work with HDMA to explore digital mobility solutions

Automaker Ford today inked a pact with Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) to assess the feasibility of a common digital mobility solution for commuters in the city. As per the agreement, Ford will collaborate and work with the city authorities to analyse Hyderabad's existing transportation system. It will then work with HDMA to design tech-based mobility solutions to improve the commuter experience, and that will optimise efficiency for transport operators, as well as reduce congestion. "Partnering with local development authorities like HMDA and offering technology solutions fine-tuned to the needs of the cities means we can help find new ways to make commuters journeys seamless," R Mahadevan, director, Ford Smart Mobility, India said in a statement. Collaborating with HMDA, Ford will engage with the relevant stakeholders and explore solutions in areas such as digital cashless one-time payments, mobile-based ticketing and smart card payments for ...

French Institute launches mobile application

A mobile application bringing to focus historical sites of Puducherry was today launched by the French Institute here. Consul General of France Catherine Suard launched the application -'Pondicherry Past and Present'-- at the premises of the 62-year-old institute, a research oriented institution of the French government. She said the mobile application presents nearly 94 geo-localised mapped sites. The application originated from a more complete research carried out by researcher Jean Deloche attached to the French Institute some time ago, according to her. She said Jean Deloche had produced a bilingual DVD on 'Pondicherry-past and present' some time ago. A release from the Institute said the mobile application contains details of the history of the sites and buildings in English and in French and their images down the years. In course of time, the details would be available in Tamil and Hindi, it said. Raphael Mathevet, Head of the Ecology Department in the French ...

Tiny robots that think, act like insects in the offing

Scientists are developing a new type of programming that will allow tiny robots to think and act like insects, making them more autonomous and adaptable to complex environments. Researchers at Cornell University in the US collaborated with the Harvard Microbiotics Laboratory, which has developed an 80-milligramme flying robot named RoboBee outfitted with a number of vision, optical flow and motion sensors. Although the robot currently remains tethered to a power source, the Harvard researchers are developing new power sources to eliminate the restraint. The Cornell algorithms will help make RoboBee more autonomous and adaptable to complex environments without significantly increasing its weight. "Getting hit by a gust of wind or a swinging door would cause these small robots to lose control. We are developing sensors and algorithms to allow RoboBee to avoid the crash, or if crashing, survive and still fly," said Silvia Ferrari, professor at Cornell University. It would ..
