The Telangana High Court has affirmed that the 50 per cent reservation ceiling set by the Supreme Court applies to local body polls, and any quota increase for OBCs should be within the framework of the "triple test". The Supreme Court's triple test is a framework for providing reservations for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in local body elections, requiring states to form a commission to collect data, specify the reservation proportion based on the commission's findings, and ensure the total reservation for SCs, STs, and OBCs does not exceed 50 per cent of the total seats. SC grants interim protection to former SIB chief in phone tapping case

The Supreme Court on Thursday granted interim protection from coercive action to former chief of Special Intelligence Bureau (SIB) in Telangana T Prabhakar Rao, an accused in the phone-tapping case. A bench comprising Justices B V Nagarathna and Satish Chandra Sharma directed Rao to appear before the investigation officer, and said his passport be made available to him. Rao, the key accused in the phone-tapping case, is suspected to be in the US. A Red Corner Notice was issued against him and his passport was revoked, a police official said earlier. The top court also directed Rao to give an undertaking that he would return to India within three days after the receipt of his passport. The Supreme Court on Thursday directed the registrar (judicial) of the Telangana High Court to forthwith visit the Kancha Gachibowli forest site where felling of trees was proposed on a 400-acre land parcel adjacent to the University of Hyderabad. The issue was mentioned before a bench of Justices B R Gavai and Augustine George Masih. "We, therefore, direct the registrar (judicial) of the High Court of Telangana to forthwith visit the site in question and submit his interim report by 3.30 pm today," the bench said. Former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy on Monday filed a writ petition in the High Court seeking restoration of the security cover to him to the level it existed till June 3. In his petition, the former CM and YSRCP chief said his security cover has been reduced to 59 personnel without any intimation from the TDP-led government in the state. The Telangana High Court on Tuesday said the Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted to investigate the TRS MLAs poaching case will continue to probe.
