Letters: Improve basics first

With reference to the piece, "A curtain-raiser to bullet trains" (February 17) by Ramakrishnan T S, trains in India take a long time to complete their journeys. Thus, the introduction of high-speed bullet trains is welcome. But what are passengers to do if tickets are unavailable a short time before a journey? In India, the number of passengers far exceeds the number of trains that can accommodate them. Tatkal tickets are expensive for many citizens and no concession is offered on their price, even for senior citizens. The tatkal scheme should be abolished. The quality of service on trains is often poor. Trains are dirty despite the popularity of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. Many people travel without reservation. Women often feel unsafe.Train travel should be hassle-free. Platforms and toilets should be kept clean. There should be comfortable waiting lounges and enough space on trains for passengers.Mahesh Kumar New DelhiLetters can be mailed, faxed or e-mailed to:The Editor, Business S
