Democrat Senators ask Trump not to extend sanction waiver on Russian oil

Two Democratic Senators have urged President Donald Trump against granting any further exemption from US sanctions on the purchase of Russian oil, contending that there is no rationale for such a move, as the war with Iran is now over. In a statement here on Tuesday, Senators Jeanne Shaheen and Elizabeth Warren said the waiver from sanctions has only helped Russia finance its "illegal war" with Ukraine. In March, the US granted a sanctions waiver to India for the purchase of Russian oil in a bid to stabilise global oil markets as the war with Iran, which started on February 28, led to a sharp increase in crude prices. The sanctions waiver was later extended to other countries. The one-month exemption has been extended twice and expires on June 17. "Extending this license yet again would give Vladimir Putin another opportunity to reap windfall financial gains while he continues his brutal war against Ukraine," the two senators said. They said an extension would also clearly contrad

Democrats feud over stock trading amid anti-corruption push against Trump

After three terms in the US House and two unsuccessful campaigns for the US Senate, Colin Allred said he's heard plenty about voters' suspicions that politicians are just trying to make a buck in Washington. "'What about the stock trading in Congress? What about people getting rich in Congress?'" Allred said they ask him regularly. "And I have to say to them, you're absolutely right about that, too. We need to be better." He's challenging Rep. Julie Johnson in the Democratic runoff for a Dallas-area House seat on Tuesday, and he's one of several candidates trying to harness populist anger over congressional stock trading. Allred has denounced Johnson for trades involving companies like Palantir, a data analytics firm with ties to President Donald Trump's administration. Johnson said her trades were handled by a financial manager, and she accused Allred of being "only out for himself". She pointed to financial disclosures that showed Allred's wealth nearly doubling during his own tim

Trump tariffs will cost US households more than $2,500 this year: Democrats

President Donald Trump is scrambling to replace the revenue the federal government lost when the Supreme Court struck down his biggest and boldest tariffs last month. If the effort succeeds, congressional Democrats warn in a study out Friday, the administration's import taxes will cost American households an average of $2,512 in 2026, up 44% from $1,745 in tariff costs last year. And this at a time when U.S. consumers are already angry over the high cost of living and the war with Iran is pushing up energy prices. "Despite a Supreme Court ruling that much of Trump's tariff agenda is illegal, the Trump administration refuses to provide relief for families," said Sen. Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire, the top Democrat on the Joint Economic Committee. "As American families continue to struggle with high costs, the President keeps choosing to institute new tariffs that will push prices even higher." Calling the study "phony," White House spokesman Kush Desai said "President Trump will ...

Abigail Spanberger wins Virginia governor race, becomes first female leader

Democrat Abigail Spanberger won the Virginia governor's race on Tuesday, defeating Republican Lt Gov Winsome Earle-Sears to give Democrats a key victory heading into the 2026 midterm elections and make history as the first-ever woman to lead the commonwealth. Spanberger's victory will flip partisan control of the governor's office when the former congresswoman and CIA case officer succeeds outgoing Republican governor Glenn Youngkin. She won with a campaign emphasising economic issues, a strategy that may serve as a model for other Democrats in next year's elections as they try to break President Donald Trump's and Republicans' hold on power in Washington and gain ground in statehouses. Throughout the campaign, Spanberger made carefully crafted economic arguments against Trump's policies, while she spent considerable sums on ads tying Earle-Sears to the president. She campaigned across the state, including in Republican-leaning areas. Yet she also emphasised her support for abortio

Democrats set Jan 16 deadline for states to apply for early 2028 primaries

Not even a year out from the last presidential election, the Democratic National Committee has begun setting up a framework for the party's next round of presidential primary elections, which could upend the early-voting calendar yet again. The Rules and Bylaws Committee of the Democratic National Committee on Monday approved a plan giving states until January 16 to submit applications to hold voting contests in the early window ahead of Super Tuesday, when a massive haul of delegates will be awarded. Four or five states will get an early slot, and all four regions East, Midwest, South and West must be represented, according to the framework. No huge tranche of delegates is necessarily at stake in the early-voting contests, but their heft has traditionally played a pivotal role for candidates seeking to lead their parties, with heavy travel rotations meaning high visibility for the states involved. We are committed to executing a fair and transparent process that will deliver a .

Pam Bondi faces tough questioning from Democrats over loyalty to Trump

Pam Bondi, Donald Trump's pick for attorney general, will face sharp questioning from Democratic senators at a confirmation hearing Wednesday expected to centre on concerns that the Republican president-elect will look to use the Justice Department's powers to seek retribution against his adversaries. Bondi, a former Florida attorney general who was part of Trump's legal team during his first of two impeachment trials before the Senate, encounters a sceptical reception from Democrats concerned by her perceived loyalty to Trump. Republicans, by contrast, eagerly welcome her as a course correction to a Justice Department they believe has pursued an overly liberal agenda and unfairly pursued Trump through investigations and a special counsel appointment resulting in two indictments. If confirmed, I will work to restore confidence and integrity to the Department of Justice and each of its components, Bondi will say in her opening statement, according to a copy of her prepared ...

Trump breaks GOP losing streak in Dearborn with Arab-American support

Faced with two choices she didn't like, Suehaila Amen chose neither. Instead, the longtime Democrat from the Arab American stronghold of Dearborn, Michigan, backed a third-party candidate for president, adding her voice to a remarkable turnaround that helped Donald Trump reclaim Michigan and the presidency. In Dearborn, where nearly half of the 110,000 residents are of Arab descent, Vice President Kamala Harris received over 2,500 fewer votes than Trump, who became the first Republican presidential candidate since former President George W. Bush in 2000 to win the city. Harris also lost neighboring Dearborn Heights to Trump, who in his previous term as president banned travel from several mostly-Muslim countries. Harris lost the presidential vote in two Detroit-area cities with large Arab American populations after months of warnings from local Democrats about the Biden-Harris administration's unwavering support for Israel in the war in Gaza. Some said they backed Trump after he ...

Trump urges supporters to donate to Democrats, help in 'financial crisis'

President-elect Donald Trump urged his supporters to donate to Democrats to help them overcome the "financial strain" in the aftermath of the general elections. In a social media post, Trump expressed his surprise that the Democrats didn't have lots of dollars left over. "Now they are being squeezed by vendors and others, he said after reports emerged that the Harris Campaign is USD 20 million in debt. Kamala Harris's campaign ended with at least USD 20 million in debt, per two sources familiar. Harris raised over USD 1 billion and had USD 118 million in the bank as of Oct 16, said Christopher Cadelago, the California bureau chief of Politico. "I am very surprised that the Democrats, who fought a hard and valiant fight in the 2020 Presidential Election, raising a record amount of money, didn't have lots of dollars left over. Now they are being squeezed by vendors and others, he said. "Whatever we can do to help them during this difficult period, I would strongly recommend we, as a

America of your dreams calling: Biden tells Democratic supporters

Outgoing US President Joe Biden on Thursday vowed to ensure a peaceful and orderly transfer of power to President-elect Donald Trump in January and said the electoral drubbing did not mean the Democrats' movement was defeated. Biden made the comments during an address to the nation a day after Trump, 78, was re-elected as the 47th president of the US after defeating Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic Party's nominee. Trump, who lost the 2020 elections to President Biden, pulled off an incredible comeback, wresting 295 electoral college votes against Harris' 226 in a fierce contest that almost left the Americans with two world views. Yesterday, I spoke with President-elect Trump to congratulate him on his victory. I assured him that I would direct my entire administration to work with his team to ensure a peaceful and orderly transition," Biden said in his address from the Rose Garden of the White House. "That's what the American people deserve, he added. The US President

Democratic lawmaker Jon Tester tries to hold key US Senate seat in Montana

Three-term incumbent Democratic U.S. Sen. Jon Tester of Montana faces perhaps his toughest reelection challenge yet on Tuesday, with control of the Senate on the line in a state that's veered sharply rightward since the 68-year-old grain farmer's first election. Republicans have pinned their hopes on Tim Sheehy, a former U.S. Navy SEAL and founder of an aerial firefighting company. Sheehy, 38, had early backing from party leaders including former President Donald Trump, clearing the political newcomer's path to win the June primary. This is the first time Tester's name appears on the same ballot as Trump, who won Montana by wide margins in 2016 and 2020. A Sheehy victory would seal Republican party dominance across the five-state Northern Plains region: Tester entered office as one of six Democratic senators in the largely rural swath of American heartland that also includes Wyoming, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota. He's now the only one. The lawmaker also is the sole ...
