Biden faces crucial campaign day, his team says no Democrat would do better

President Joe Biden's ability to run for reelection faced crucial tests Thursday as he prepared for questions at a highly anticipated press conference and sent his team to meet privately with sceptical senators on Capitol Hill, as a 10th House Democrat called for him to exit the race. The Biden campaign laid out what it sees as its path to keeping the White House in a new memo, saying that winning the blue wall states of Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Michigan is the clearest pathway to victory. And it declared no other Democrat would do better against Republican Donald Trump. Biden will head to Detroit on Friday. It all comes as Democrats are facing an intractable problem. Top donors, supporters and key lawmakers are doubtful of Biden's abilities to carry on his reelection bid after his recent debate performance, but the hard-fighting 81-year-old president refuses to give up as he prepares to take on Trump in a rematch. There is also no indication that anyone else would outperform the

Trump wants Black, Latino votes but lacks popularity among both groups

As he prepares to accept the Republican nomination for the third time, Donald Trump has promised new efforts to expand his coalition - and, in particular, to win over more of the nonwhite voters who largely rejected him during the 2020 election. But an AP analysis of two consecutive polls conducted in June by the AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research shows that about 7 in 10 Black Americans have a somewhat or very unfavourable view of Trump, as do about half of Hispanic Americans. While both groups do see Trump a little more favourably than when he left office in 2021, their opinion of him is still more negative than positive. Any gains in support among Black or Hispanic Americans would be helpful for Trump, who won 35% of Hispanic voters and 8% of Black voters in 2020, according to AP VoteCast, and has struggled to grow his appeal beyond his base. He's hoping, in part, to capitalize on frustration with his opponent, since President Joe Biden's favorability among Black and ...

Biden attributes pressure to elites; voters paint a complicated picture

Considering her choices in this year's rapidly approaching presidential election, Rochelle Jones thinks both major party candidates should step aside. They just need to get somebody that's going to run this country right, that don't have any health issues, that care about us people, the 39-year-old culinary worker at Michigan State University said this week. As President Joe Biden struggles to recover from a disastrous debate performance last month, he has argued that desires for him to leave the campaign are limited to his party's elite. But Jones' sentiment reflects a more nuanced reality unfolding in some of the most politically competitive states, from here in Michigan to Pennsylvania and Nevada. In interviews this week, many voters said they still support Biden. But they also expressed concern that a lack of enthusiasm for his candidacy could cause a lot of Democratic voters to stay home, handing the race to Republican Donald Trump. Some are concerned as well about the impact

Trump challenges Prez Biden to another debate, golf match this week

Donald Trump, the Republican presumptive presidential nominee, has offered his rival and incumbent President Joe Biden the opportunity to redeem himself in front of the entire world via a debate this week while also challenging him to a round of golf. Trump's challenges to Biden, 81, came as he was feeling quite confident after his maiden debate performance against the president late last month. I'm officially offering Joe the chance to redeem himself in front of the entire world, Trump, 78, said at a campaign rally in Florida. Let's do another debate this week so that sleepy Joe Biden can prove to everyone all over the world that he has what it takes to be president, he said. But this time it will be man-to-man, no moderators, no holds barred. Just name the place, anytime, anywhere, Trump added. Biden, the Democratic nominee, performed poorly at the June 27 presidential debate in Atlanta, after which even his own party colleagues are asking him to drop from the race. Biden has ..

Nikki Haley releases her delegates to support Trump at RNC next week

Nikki Haley is releasing the delegates she won during this year's Republican primary so that they're free to support Donald Trump at next week's convention, a move that goes toward solidifying GOP support around the party's presumptive nominee. Haley on Tuesday opted to release her 97 delegates won across a dozen primaries and caucuses earlier this year, according to her former campaign. In a statement, the former South Carolina governor and United Nations ambassador called for party unity at the upcoming Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, also calling Democratic President Joe Biden not competent to serve a second term and saying that Vice President Kamala Harris whom Haley repeatedly intimated would end up as president in Biden's stead would be a disaster for America. We need a president who will hold our enemies to account, secure our border, cut our debt, and get our economy back on track," Haley said. "I encourage my delegates to support Donald Trump next week in ...

Biden firm on his candidature, says it's time for intra-party drama to end

US President Joe Biden, in an open letter to congressional Democrats, stood firm on Monday against calls for him to drop his reelection candidacy and called for an end to the intra-party drama that has torn apart Democrats since his dismal public debate performance. Biden's efforts to shore up a deeply anxious Democratic Party came as lawmakers returned to Washington confronting a choice -- work to revive his campaign or try to edge out the party leader, a make-or-break time for his campaign and their own political futures. Biden wrote in the two-page letter that "the question of how to move forward has been well-aired for over a week now. And it's time for it to end". He stressed that the party has "one job", which is to defeat presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump in November. "We have 42 days to the Democratic Convention and 119 days to the general election," Biden said in the letter, distributed by his reelection campaign. "Any weakening of resolve or lack of

From plane to fundraisers, everything in place for Republican VP candidate

The future Republican vice presidential candidate's plane is currently parked in an undisclosed hangar, an empty spot on its fuselage for where a decal featuring his or her name will soon be placed. Fundraisers have been planned. All that's left: an announcement from former President Donald Trump on who's his pick. Senior advisers and longtime allies insist they still don't know who the presumptive GOP nominee will choose to join him on the ticket with many believing the choice is still in flux. The decision will come at an unprecedented time of upheaval in the presidential race. President Joe Biden and the Democratic Party continue to grapple with his dismal debate performance and the intensifying calls for the 81-year-old president to step aside in favor of a younger candidate. The Democrats' crisis has given Trump little incentive to change the subject with a VP announcement that would be sure to draw a flurry of attention and focus to his pick. But Trump will have plenty of

US elections: Black Democrats rally behind Biden and talk up Kamala Harris

As President Joe Biden tries to revive his embattled reelection bid, Vice President Kamala Harris led a parade of Black Democrats who warned Saturday that the threat of another Donald Trump presidency remains the most important calculation ahead of November. Yet in more than 20 minutes on stage at the Essence Festival of Culture, Harris did not acknowledge Biden's dismal debate performance or calls for the 81-year-old president to end his reelection bid. In fact, she barely mentioned Biden at all a stark contrast to the Congressional Black Caucus members who forcefully and repeatedly defended the president by name. This is probably the most significant election of our lifetime, Harris said, before riffing on Trump musing about being a dictator, pushing the Supreme Court rightward and promising retribution on political enemies. In 122 days, we each have the power to decide what kind of country we want to live in. Harris's appearance at the nation's largest annual celebration of Blac

Biden may decide whether to remain in presidential race: Hawaii governor

President Joe Biden could make a decision within days whether to remain a candidate for reelection, said Hawaii's governor who participated in a recent meeting with Biden and other Democratic governors and whose family has known the president for years. And if Biden decides not to run, Hawaii Gov. Josh Green told The Associated Press on Saturday that he believes the president will designate Vice President Kamala Harris to replace him on the ticket. I think the president stays in this race unless he feels that it is not winnable, or he feels that he has to hear other voices in his inner circle that he shouldn't run, Green said. If the president felt that he wasn't up to it and truly not up to it, he would step down." We'll probably know in the next couple of days how the president feels about all this, he said. Biden has repeatedly insisted that he will remain in the race against his likely Republican opponent, former President Donald Trump. But questions about Biden's mental acuity

Republicans turn focus to Harris as talk of replacing Biden intensifies

For years it's been a Republican scare tactic. A vote to reelect President Joe Biden, the GOP often charges, is really a vote for Vice President Kamala Harris. It's an attack line sometimes tinged with racist and misogynist undertones and often macabre imagery. But after Biden's dismal performance at last week's presidential debate, which has sparked Democratic calls for him to step aside, what was once dismissed as a far-right conspiracy Harris replacing Biden could now have a chance of coming to pass. And Republicans, including Donald Trump, are ramping up their attacks. Trump and his allies have been rolling out new attack lines against Harris, insulting her abilities, painting her as Biden's chief enabler and accusing her of being part of a coverup of his health. It's an effort, campaign officials insist, that is not a reflection of their concerns about a potential change at the top of the ticket, given Biden's insistence he is not leaving the race. But in a post marking ...
