Dhankhar signs Women's Quota Bill; to be placed before Murmu for assent

Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar on Thursday signed the women's reservation bill as passed by Parliament before it is presented to President Droupadi Murmu for her assent. 'BJP unwilling to implement Women's Quota Bill, want to use it as gimmick'

The Congress on Monday alleged the Narendra Modi government was unwilling to implement the Women's Reservation Bill and only wanted to showcase it as an election gimmick. Speaking to reporters here, the AICC national coordinator for social media and digital platforms Bhavya Narsimhamurthy demanded that the government implement the bill without delay. The bill to reserve one-third of the seats in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies for women received the parliamentary nod last week. The 128th Constitution amendment bill called the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, will be implemented after a delimitation exercise to redraw parliamentary and assembly constituencies based on the census, which the government has said will be commissioned next year. Narsimhamurthy recalled that in 1989, then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi introduced a law reserving 33 per cent of seats in local bodies for women. However, when the bill was introduced, BJP stalwarts L K Advani, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Yashwant Sin

Ahead of PM's Bhopal visit, Uma Bharti raises demand for OBC reservation

Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's scheduled arrival in Bhopal, senior BJP leader Uma Bharti on Monday said she expects the PM to give a positive signal about carving out a quota for OBCs within the recently passed women's reservation bill. Earlier last week, Bharti had expressed her disappointment for not including the OBC (Other Backward Classes) quota within the constitutional amendment bill which provided 33 per cent reservation to women in Lok Sabha and state legislatures. "Prime Minister is welcomed in the land of Bhopal. He is the messiah of the poor and backward, I am sure he will give a positive signal on OBC reservation for women, Bharti posted on X on Monday morning, hours before the PM visits Bhopal where he will address a mega meeting of BJP workers. Bharti had told PTI last week that she was happy that the women's reservation bill was introduced in Parliament, but was feeling somewhat dejected because it doesn't have the provision for reservation for OBCs. BJP's Kishan Reddy attacks BRS over friendship with 'anti-women' AIMIM

Telangana BJP President G Kishan Reddy has sought to know how the ruling BRS can maintain a friendship with the AIMIM which voted against the Women's Reservation Bill in Parliament. Though the issue of women's reservation has been a part of public discourse in the country for many decades, no party or leader has been able to take it to its logical end, he told reporters on Sunday. "Modi is the leader who took revolutionary decisions on pending issues, including taxation, Article 370, Ram Janmabhoomi and construction of toilets for poor in the last nine years," he said. The bill -- which allocates one-third of the seats in Lok Sabha, State legislative assemblies and the Delhi assembly for women -- was passed in the new Parliament building as per the Centre's decision, he said. Unfortunately, Hyderabad-based AIMIM was the only party to vote against the Women's Reservation Bill in Parliament, Reddy pointed out. Describing AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi as the "guru" of CM K ...

From panchayat to Parl: How 33% reservation empowered women at panchayats

Geeta Mahanand, the sarpanch of Risama panchayat in Chhattisgarh's Durg, said she would have never come forward to contest the rural polls had there been no reservation for women in the Panchayati raj system. A housewife who was thrust into politics after the seat was reserved for women, Mahanand said reservation not just empowered her to make decisions but also boosted her confidence to do more for the society. In the three decades since reservation of seats for women in panchayati raj institutions was introduced, the country saw women dismantling gender barriers to take the lead in the political field at the grassroots level and excel in it. In 1992, the P V Narasimha Rao government passed the 73rd and 74th Constitutional Amendment Acts mandating the reservation of one-third of seats for women in Panchayati Raj institutions. Over three decades later, the 128th Constitution amendment bill, referred to as the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, is seen as yet another significant stride ..

Leaders from Other Backward Classes have agreed to a big meeting on Saturday to find ways to seek quota for OBCs in the just-cleared women's reservation bill, senior BJP leader Uma Bharti has said on X. The former Madhya Pradesh CM, however, has not shared details about the time and venue of the meeting of the OBC leaders on September 23. The bill to reserve one-third of the seats in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies for women received the parliamentary nod on Thursday as the Rajya Sabha unanimously voted in its favour. Now, if a path is to be chalked out to raise the demand for another amendment for reservation for OBCs, a discussion (in that regard) was held with backward class leaders from in and around Bhopal. Women's Reservation Bill must be implemented immediately: Rahul Gandhi

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday demanded that the women's reservation bill be implemented immediately and alleged that the government does not want to do this while distracting from the demand for caste census. The Women's reservation bill is a good thing, but two "footnotes" of census and delimitation have been attached, Gandhi told a press conference here a day after the women's reservation bill was passed by Parliament. The Congress said delimitation and census were "poor excuses" for the postponement of the women's quota and alleged that the entire exercise was to create an election issue, without actually implementing it. The opposition party also dubbed the bill as a "teasing illusion". The bill to reserve one-third of the seats in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies for women received the parliamentary nod on Thursday as the Rajya Sabha unanimously voted in its favour.
