More than 1.25 cr women register for MP govt's 'Ladli Behna' scheme

More than 1.25 crore women have registered themselves for benefits under the Madhya Pradesh government's flagship 'Ladli Behna' scheme, an official said on Monday. The scheme, which was launched by Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan in March, aims to empower women socially and financially. As many as 1,25,23,437 women have enrolled in the scheme till April 30, which was the last day for registration, the official said. Under the scheme, all eligible women will receive Rs 1,000 per month as financial assistance from the state government, which will be directly credited to their bank accounts, he said. Launched with an eye on the upcoming Assembly polls, the scheme was considered as a major game changer for the ruling party, but sensing its political benefits, the Congress also announced a provision of Rs 1,500 per month for women if it comes to power in the state. The state Assembly election is due in Madhya Pradesh this year end.

BJP leader Poonia slams Rajasthan government over crimes against women

BJP leader Satish Poonia on Sunday mounted an offensive on the Congress government in Rajasthan on the issue of law and order and alleged that the state was top in crimes against women. Goldman Sachs, which has funded the business and management education of 10,000 women in India, has claimed these beneficiaries have helped create around 12,000 new jobs as well as add Rs 2,800 crore in revenues to the country's economy in the past 18 months. The investment banking major first launched the graduation programme in the country in 2008. It relaunched the same 18 months ago when it claims to have funded the business and management education of 10,000 women under its 'Womeninitiative'. Over 7,000 women personnel are serving in the Indian Army at present followed by 1,636 in the Indian Air Force and 748 in the Navy, according to details provided by the government in Lok Sabha on Friday. Replying to a question, Minister of State for Defence Ajay Bhatt said 7,093 women are in the Army, which included 6,993 in the Army Medical Corps, Army Dental Corps and Military Nursing Service (MNS). Bhatt said, currently women are serving in officer's cadre only in the Indian Air Force (IAF) and their strength as on March 1 (excluding medical and dental branches) is 1,636.
