2022: Looking back at 20 years of Delhi Metro, on track for 2023

It has been 20 years of the Delhi Metro, 20 years of a public transport system that has been the great class leveller and transformed the way Dellhiites work, party and manage their hectic lives in a city' that stretches across three states. As 2022 winds down, it's also time to track the past, present and future of a lifeline that connects far corners of the sprawling National Capital Region (NCR) comprising Delhi, of course, and also its thriving suburbs Gurgaon and Noida, as well as industrial cities Ghaziabad and Faridabad. It started in December 2002 with a corridor of just 8.2 km spanning six stations on the Red Line and has now grown to over 390 km. The network span comprises 286 stations (including the Noida Greater Noida Metro Corridor and Gurgaon's Rapid Metro). The multi-hued network now with lines in yellow, blue, green, grey and in multiple shades of pink, including magenta and violet transformed the landscape of the city and boosted its transport infrastructure. MVA's collapse, its aftermath kept political pot boiling in Maha in 2022

The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) experiment imploded in 2022 putting a question mark on the political future of Uddhav Thackeray even as the massive split in the Shiv Sena and its aftermath kept the political pot boiling in Maharashtra throughout the year. Maharashtra, which was governed by the Congress till 1977-78 and later in the early 90s, has been following coalition politics centred around 'aghadis' (coalition fronts of the Congress and Nationalist Congress Party) and 'yuti' (Shiv Sena and Bharatiya Janata Party). The upheaval in the Sena resulting in the collapse of the MVA government was the second such instance in the state's political history. As a minister in 1978, Sharad Pawar had led a rebellion and toppled the Vasantdada Patil government to become the chief minister at the age of 38. The era of coalition politics took an unprecedented turn this year when Eknath Shinde walked out with 39 rebel legislators of the Shiv Sena and claimed to be the original Sena. Never before ...

Handling terror groups, asylum to Hindus, Sikhs: MHA 2022 Highlights

Tackling violence perpetrated by terror groups, close monitoring of activities of some NGOs and efforts to ameliorate the woes of persecuted minorities of Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan were some of the key issues which dominated the agenda of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in 2022. The ministry also initiated the process of complete overhaul of criminal laws, especially the Indian Penal Code (IPC) 1860, the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) 1973 and the Indian Evidence Act 1872, and adapt them in accordance with the contemporary needs and aspirations of the people. Action against Chinese-controlled predatory lending apps, which allegedly harass, blackmail and adopt harsh recovery practices and strict vigil along the international borders, some of them have seen "demographic changes", also kept the MHA busy in the year. One of the major steps that the MHA took in 2002 was declaring the Popular Front of India (PFI) and several of its associates banned for five years under t

Pre-matric scholarship scope for OBCs: SJ&E ministry 2022 highlights

From limiting coverage of pre-matric scholarship for OBCs students to setting up a commission to examine the matter of giving Scheduled Caste status to religious converts who were 'historically' SCs, the Social Justice and Empowerment Ministry remained in spotlight this year. The ministry evoked critical reactions from various quarters over its decision to limit its pre-matric scholarship scheme meant for OBC and minority communities to students of classes 9 and 10. Earlier, the pre-matric scholarship used to cover education for grades 1 to 8 as well for students belonging to minority communities. The ministry also appointed a commission headed by former CJI K G Balakrishnan to examine the matter of giving Scheduled Caste status to new people who claim to "historically" have belonged to the SCs, but have converted to a religion other than those mentioned in the presidential orders. Accessibility remains a major challenge for the physically challenged in India even this year. The ..

Political turbulence in 2022 turned rivals into allies in Nepal

Nepal witnessed political turbulence in 2022 that dramatically turned rivals into allies and throned former guerrilla leader Pushpa Kamal Dahal "Prachanda" as the Prime Minister for a third time, as Kathmandu made efforts to balance ties with immediate neighbours India and China with high-profile talks and visits. Prachanda, the 68-year-old CPN-Maoist Centre chairman, surprisingly left his pre-poll alliance with the Nepali Congress and joined hands with rival CPN-UML led by former premier K P Sharma Oli and five other smaller parties to become prime minister. Elections to the lower house and seven provincial assemblies were held last month to end the prolonged political instability that had plagued the Himalayan nation. However, the polls resulted in a hung parliament, with the Nepali Congress emerging as the single largest party, followed by CPN-UML and Prachanda's CPN-Maoist. No party in the 275-member House of Representatives got 138 seats required to form a government. The whee
