Registrations for H-1B visas dropped by 38.5 per cent in fiscal year 2027 with the US saying it had approved more applicants with advanced degrees and higher salaries of those "making a real impact on the economy."
The decision by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is likely to affect the Indians the most, who made up an estimated 71 per cent of all approved H-1B applications in recent years.
In a post on X on Thursday, the USCIS said only 17.7 per cent of all selected registrations were in the lowest wage category.
"The number of properly submitted registrations plummeted by 38.5 per cent, from 3,43,981 in fiscal year 2026 to just 2,11,600 in fiscal year 2027," the USCIS said.
Nearly three-fourths of the applications approved were of persons holding masters degrees or higher, the USCIS said.

Torrent Pharmaceuticals Ltd on Friday reported a 27 per cent decline in profit after tax to Rs 364 crore in the fourth quarter ended March 31, 2026, impacted by exceptional items outgo.
The company had posted a net profit of Rs 498 crore in the corresponding period of the preceding fiscal, Torrent Pharmaceuticals said in a statement.
Total revenue from operations in the fourth quarter of FY26 stood at Rs 4,197 crore as against Rs 2,959 crore in the year-ago period, it added.
The company had exceptional items outgo of Rs 66 crore in the quarter, as per the regulatory filing.
The board has recommended a final dividend of Rs 9 per equity share of a face value of Rs 5 each.
The pharma company's India business revenue stood at Rs 2,215 crore, up 43 per cent, in the quarter, while the Brazil revenue came in at Rs 455 crore, up by 30 per cent. Revenue from the US business stood at Rs 396 crore, up 31 per cent year-on-year, Torrent Pharma said.

The head of the World Health Organisation says the Ebola outbreak in Congo is "spreading rapidly" and now poses a "very high" risk at the national level.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom said Friday the UN health agency was revising upward to "very high" its assessment of the risk within Congo, which had previously been deemed as high.
The risk remains high for regional spread and low at global levels, he told reporters.
The WHO chief noted that 82 cases have been confirmed in the Democratic Republic of Congo, with seven confirmed deaths, "but we know the epidemic in DRC is much larger."
He said there are now almost 750 suspected cases and 177 suspected deaths. The situation in neighbouring Uganda is "stable" with two cases confirmed in people who had travelled from Congo, with one death.
