India chased down the total 156 after Duckworth Lewis method with ease in Napier. After winning the opening match against New Zealand in Napier by 8 wickets, "It has been a long journey, especially when I played World Cup. It took me 2 yrs to recover from injury. After long process, I gained confidence and performed better. I'll continue to perform this way", said Shami during a press conference in New Zealand's Napier. Shami surpassed the record of Irfan Pathan, who took 100 ODI wickets in 59 matches.

Talking about the same, he said, "Our bowlers would feel more confident as they have twice bowled Aron Finch who was unable to perform well in the series. They must have seen the weakness of Aron Finch and have implemented their plans nicely and we are hitting the right areas and are not giving him singles that easily. And once you create that pressure to the batsman then he will take more risk to score more runs and there we will grab the opportunity." Rohit Sharma was the only Indian batsman who tried to keep India in the match till last overs with his century. He said that Australian bowling attack was disciplined and it should be given respect. "We already lost three opening wickets and we needed a partnership but bowling was disciplined and I respect that", said Sharma. He said, "Over the years we've seen the kind of presence he has in dressing room and on field. With him being around, there's calmness around the group, it's also a bit of a help to the captain, he is like a guiding light. He has finished so many games for us, that role he plays is very important in terms of his batting. His calmness, his advice is very important. So, things he does bring a lot on the table for us and his presence around the group is a massive factor for us."
