Nepal observes National Unification Day

Kathmandu (Nepal), Jan 13 (ANI): Nepal on Sunday observed the birthday of Prithvi Narayan Shah, the founding father of unified Nepal as the National Unification Day. Hundreds of people poured onto the roads of Kathmandu and gathered in front of Singha Durbar to pay tribute to the statue of Prithvi Narayan Shah to mark the 298th birth anniversary of the late king. Nepal Tourism Minister Yogesh Bhattarai attended the event at the western gate of Singha Durbar. Various cultural and social activities are also arranged to celebrate the day.

Military, police on high alert in Muscat following Sultan Qaboos' death

New Delhi, Jan 11 (ANI): Following the death of Omani Sultan Qaboos bin Said al-Said, who left no heir to the throne, the police and military forces in the capital city have been put on high alert on Saturday. According to state media, along with declaring the alert status, Oman's high military council also called for the royal family to meet to appoint the country's next ruler, reported RT. If the ruling family fails to come to an agreement within three days, a 1996 statute requires a committee of military leaders, court officials and lawmakers to enthrone a person named by the former sultan in private, stored in a sealed letter. Qaboos was 79-year-old and was ill for a long time. He has served as the ruler of Oman since 1970 when he ousted his father in a bloodless coup. Hundreds of New Yorkers demand US to reduce tensions with Iran amid escalation

New Delhi, Jan 10 (ANI): Hundreds of people took to the streets of New York on Jan 09 to protest a potential US military action against Iran. The protesters gathered in the Civic Center neighbourhood in Lower Manhattan holding up signs reading "Hands off Iran," "We demand deescalation," "Say no to war with Iran," "No war or sanctions on Iran," "Rage against war," and "We choose peace," among many others. An increased police presence was witnessed on the site with dozens of NYPD officers maintaining public order and a helicopter flying over the square. Recently, Iranian military commander Qasem Soleimani was killed in an air strike on the orders of US President Donald Trump. In retaliation to the incident, Iran fired more than a dozen missiles at US forces in Iraq. Iran claimed that around 80 "American terrorists" were killed in the missile attack, however, in a press conference; Trump confirmed no causalities in the attack by Iran.

1 killed, 3 injured in Ottawa 'targeted' shooting

Ottawa (Canada), Jan 09 (ANI): At least one person was killed and three suffered injuries in a shooting in Canada's capital Ottawa. The police have called it a targeted shooting. The incident took place near the Canadian Parliament. When police arrived at the crime scene they found four people inside with gunshot wounds, police said at a brief news conference. One person died at the scene, police said. A 15-year-old boy was taken to CHEO, a pediatric hospital and research centre in Ottawa, in stable condition, a hospital spokesperson said.

Ukrainian airplane crashes in Iran

Tehran (Iran), Jan 08 (ANI): A Ukrainian airplane carrying at least 170 passengers and crew was crashed in Iran on Jan 08. Ukrainian jetliner has crashed shortly after take-off from Tehran's main airport. The plane was crashed due to technical difficulties. According to reports, there are no survivors left in the plane crash.

I will be making statement tomorrow morning" The missile attacks came in retaliation to the killing of Iranian general Qassem Soleimani in US air strike.

Sikh youth killed by unidentified person in Peshawar

Peshawar (Pakistan), Jan 06 (ANI): A Sikh youth was killed by unidentified person(s) in Peshawar. The body of the person was found in the Chamkani police station area of Peshawar Police said that the Sikh person was a resident of Shangla District of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and had come to Peshawar to shop for a wedding. The family of the victim got to know about his death from a phone call by the unidentified assailant, suggesting that the incident could be a case of personal enmity. The dead body has been shifted to a hospital for postmortem.

New Delhi, Jan 04 (ANI): Bolivia will hold new presidential election on May 03, after the country's electoral tribunal announced previous election invalid. Previous elections were annulled following allegations of fraud and Bolivia's now-ousted President Evo Morales who was declared the winner last year in a widely disputed election. "Election tribunal is working to fix problems with vote counting and the computer system which the organization of American States had claimed", said Salvador Romero, president of the tribunal.

Violent mob outside Pakistan's Nankana Sahib dispersed after police releases abductor of Sikh girl

Punjab (Pakistan), Jan 04 (ANI): A large number of Muslims had gathered and shouted anti-Sikh slogans outside the Nankana Sahib Gurdwara in Pakistan's Punjab on January 03. Earlier in the day, stones were also pelted at the Gurdwara led by the family of a boy who had allegedly abducted a Sikh girl Jagjit Kaur, daughter of the Gurdwara's panthi. The protesters also threatened to destroy the gurdwara and build a mosque in its place. Nepal: Students and space enthusiast witness solar eclipse in Nepal

Kathmandu (Nepal), Dec 26 (ANI): Students from various Nepali schools and varsities flocked Kathmandu's BP Koirala Memorial Planetarium, Observatory and Science Museum as the observatory had made special arrangements to view the solar eclipse through a telescope directly. Executive Director of the Observatory, Sanat Kumar Sharma said that the arrangements were made for directly witnessing the eclipse through solar filters-fitted telescope to support cultivating scientific conscience and culture among the public.The eclipse reached its median time at 10.01 a.m. in Kathmandu, at 9.52 a.m. in Mahendranagar and at 9.59 a.m. at Bhadrapur and ended by 11.33 am at these places. Similarly, Nepal Astronomical Society also facilitated observation of the solar eclipse through a telescope, available for the interested people at their office in Battisputali, Society President Suresh Bhattarai was quoted as saying.
