Who is Ripun Bora?
Ripun Bora is an Indian politician hailing from Assam. He is a member of the Indian National Congress and, currently, he is the president of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee. He is also a Member of Parliament in Rajya Sabha from Assam. He has previously served as a minister in the Assam government.
Bora was born on October 1, 1955, in Assam to Ambarudhar Bora and Shrimati Hameswari Bora. He currently resides in Guwahati in Assam and is married to Monika Bora. Bora did his schooling from Gohpur High School. Later, he completed MA in Economics and LLB.
 
Bora was elected to the Rajya Sabha, the Upper House of Indian Parliament, on 21 March 2016. He was elected along with Ranee Narah who is also from the Indian National Congress. During the biennial Rajya Sabha elections, Congress got support from Badruddin Ajmal-led AIUDF, which ensured the win. Out of a total of 114 MLAs, the Congress candidate got the support of 85 MLAs out of which 67 were from INC, 16 of AIUDF, 1 Independent, and 1 of BJP. The other parties, which included the AGP and BPF, boycotted the polls even when it had earlier promised to support Independent candidate Mahabir Jain, who had filed nomination papers.
 
On September 21, 2020, Bora was suspended from the Rajya Sabha for unruly behaviour in the house. He was suspended along with 7 other members for tearing documents and heckling the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.

2021 Assam Assembly election is the 15th Legislative Assembly election to be held between 27th March and 6th April in three phases. Assam Assembly has a total of 126 seats and currently, the state is ruled by the BJP with Sarbananda Sonowal as the Chief Minister. The Indian National Congress is the main opposition party in the state.
