Who is Aminul Haque Laskar?

Aminul Haque Laskar is a politician from the Sonai constituency in Assam, the only Muslim candidate elected on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ticket in the state Legislative Assembly in 2016.

Besides BJP, Laskar had the support of Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodo People’s Front, the two parties who were partners in the BJP-led ruling coalition in Assam. On July 31, 2019, he was elected unopposed as the Deputy Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly.

The legislator came to the fore in 2018 when he hit headlines after receiving a letter from an organisation to quit BJP within a fortnight or face death.

As a student, Laskar was associated with the student wing of Congress NSUI but later shifted to the All Assam Students Union. From there, he jumped to AGP and finally the BJP.

The MLA is said to be close to Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. Aminul and Sonowal joined BJP on the same day and place in 2011.

The 50-year-old leader is a Bengali and a contractor by profession. Even though born in Silchar, he represents Sonai where over 95 per cent of the Muslims speak Bangla. According to Laskar, the community he belongs to had a misunderstanding and bias towards BJP which is changing.

A graduate by education, his election affidavit mentioned several criminal cases, including criminal intimidation, trespass, and rioting.
