Rohit Sharma is the captain of the Indian team in the ODI format. Sharma is a right-handed batsman, right-arm off-break bowler. The 'Hitman' as he is called, has enjoyed an illustrious international career across all formats. In Test cricket (2013–2024), he played 67 matches, scoring 4,301 runs in 116 innings at an average of 40.57, with 12 centuries and a highest score of 212. In the ODI format (2007–2025), he has been one of India’s most consistent performers, amassing 11,168 runs in 273 matches at an impressive average of 48.76, including 32 centuries and a record-breaking 264 as his highest score.
His strike rate of 92.8 reflects his aggressive batting style. In T20 Internationals (2007–2024), Rohit scored 4,231 runs in 159 games at an average of 32.05 and a strike rate of 140.89, registering 5 centuries and 32 half-centuries. Known for his six-hitting prowess, he smashed 344 sixes in ODIs and 205 in T20Is. Rohit retired from Tests and T20Is as one of India's most prolific and impactful batters across formats.
Rohit Sharma's life and education
Sharma was born on April 30, 1987, in Maharashtra's Nagpur. He is married to Ritika Sajdeh and the couple has a daughter together. Sharma has done his schooling at Swami Vivekanand International School and Junior College, Mumbai and Our Lady of Vailankanni High School, Mumbai.
He joined a cricket camp in 1999 and was coached by Dinesh Lad there.
Rohit Sharma's career
Sharma started his career by making his List A debut for West Zone in Deodhar Trophy against Central Zone in Gwalior in March 2005.
He made his first-class debut in July 2006 for India A against New Zealand A in Darwin. In the 2006-07 season, Sharma made his Ranji Trophy debut for Mumbai against Gujarat. He was made the captain of the Mumbai team in October 2013, after the retirement of Ajit Agarkar.
Sharma made his Test debut at Kolkata's Eden Gardens in November 2013 against West Indies.
He made his debut in the Cricket World Cup in March 2015 and played eight matches for India for the tournament in Australia. He scored 330 runs with one century in the tournament.
Sharma in the 2019 Cricket World Cup series, in a match against Sri Lanka, scored five centuries, becoming the first batsman to do so. He made 648 runs in the tournament, becoming the leading run-scorer and winning the ICC's Golden Bat award.
He scored his 2,000th run in October 2019, in the third Test against South Africa, where he also hit his first double century. Replacing Cheteshwar Pujara, Sharma became vice-captain of India's Test team in 2020 during the team's tour of Australia.
Sharma scored his first overseas Test Century in September 2011 against England at The Oval, where he also reached the target of 3,000 runs in Test cricket.
In January 2022, he was named captain of the Indian team for the limited-overs series against the West Indies.
ODI World Cup journey Rohit Sharma made his Cricket World Cup debut in March 2015, participating in eight matches during the tournament hosted in Australia. India advanced to the semi-finals but were defeated by the hosts. Sharma accumulated 330 runs in the tournament, which included a century—137 runs—against Bangladesh in the quarter-final.
In April 2019, Sharma was named vice-captain of India’s squad for the ICC World Cup in England. He started the tournament with a century (122 runs) against South Africa, during which he also crossed the 12,000-run mark in international cricket. He continued his stellar form with centuries against Pakistan, England, and Bangladesh. In the match against Sri Lanka, he scored his fifth century of the tournament, becoming the first cricketer to achieve five centuries in a single World Cup edition. This feat also tied him with Sachin Tendulkar for the most centuries (six) across all World Cups. Sharma finished as the tournament's top run-scorer with 648 runs, earning the ICC Golden Bat award, becoming the third Indian to claim the honour.
On 8 October 2023, Sharma captained India in a World Cup match for the first time, leading the side against Australia. At that point, he became the oldest player to captain India in a World Cup, underlining his experience and leadership. Just a few days later, on 11 October, he surpassed Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the most World Cup centuries by scoring his seventh century during a game against Afghanistan.
