Close on the heels of Cadila Pharmaceuticals' launch of Polycap, a five-in-one wonder drug, Vadodara-based Hindustan Biosynth is all set to come up with its herbal version this year. Like its allopathic counterpart, the herbal polypill aims to serve the purpose of five individual therapies including reduced cholestrol, lower blood pressure and blood clotting abilities.
"Our company will be launching a product similar to polypill, that works as a five-in-one drug to reduce blood pressure, cholestrol and reduces the chances of a heart attack and stroke. The research is on at a few of our sources including Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and we will be launching the herbal product this year," said KS Chhabra, managing director, Hindustan Biosynth Limited.
The polypill will be launched along with other products that the company has lined up for the current year, including immunomodulators and a drug for the treatment of piles.
Currently catering to the urban segment, the company is also looking at expanding its presence into rural markets with its herbal products. "We are more into preventive health care than thereupetic health care and thus would like to focus on lifestyle diseases, which are vastly present in the rural areas of prosperous states like Gujarat, Punjab, Haryana and Kerala. We would like to explore the rural markets of these states as they have prospective buyers with a better earning level and the competition for our segment is low, at present. Our foray into the rural market will be with herbal products like Bio-DM capsules for sugar level management, Bio-GLP capsules for cholestrol and lipid, Bio-Figor to treat obesity naturally, among 25 other formulations," Chhabra said.
According to company officials, the company is looking at equity partnership wth international investors. Sources said the company has entered into an innovative business plan contest and has been shortlisted in order to stand a chance to attract investments from Indian Angel Network to fund its operations.
Hindustan Biosynth has grown to become one of Gujarat’s leading players of the pharma industry, with presence in pharmaceuticals, herbals and nutraceuticals markets.
The company recently acquired its group firm Hindustan Pharmaceuticals and aims to be the number two player in herbal essentials in the next few years.
