German car maker Volkswagen’s India unit has been directed by the National Green Tribunal to deposit Rs 1 billion with the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), for alleged use of a cheat device in diesel cars to flout emission norms. The company claimed its vehicles are ‘compliant’ with the country’s emission norms and will ‘challenge’ the tribunal’s order.

A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel also formed a committee comprising officials of the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Ministry of Heavy Industries, CPCB, and Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), to calculate the actual quantum of environmental loss,
